Game of Thrones

HBO - tonight at 9. Early descriptions call it a far more interesting version of LoTR style fantasy. A lot of reviewers that don't do the fantasy or sci-fi thing loved the screeners.

I won't be watching tonight as hoops are going hard, but figured I'd put a reminder up for mother.

I think of all the online personalities I have ran into over the years you are the one that I would be most disappointed in after meeting you in real life.

For no other reason that at this point I am 100% certain you are your avatar. Nothing else is possible.

Personally I think there are hundreds of other reasons.

But to each his own and yours was nicer.

I was speaking solely of your reason for being disappointed in meeting Motherscratcher. I have no opinion on the show and if I watch it will be via oD or replay.

I don't know when I will fit it in this week as the Killing has first go and it's the NBA Playoffs...

LOTR was pretty solid, despite the fruitcake Froto.

I watched LotR when I was home for a couple months. I think it contributed to the headaches and two months was barely enough time to get all three movies in.

I should NOT have watched Green Street Hooligans so soon after LotR. Kept expecting that fat Sean Astin to bail Froto out of a soccer brawl.

Very enjoyable show. I should have watched the 1/2 hour pre-series intro, but I put together most of the story line. The opening scene was most excellent.

From what I read, this episode is supposed to the slowest of the first six the critics were shown.

If so, it bodes well. A bit confusing at this point with all the characters they were needing to introduce, but still enjoyable.

And as mentioned...some major boobage.

I enjoyed it. I think they played the incest card a wee bit early though. I don't care for the midget, need to kill him off or something.

Isn't 'Wee Bit' the midget? Should be.

I'm confused.

After further review I'm done with the show anyway. If I wanna see fairies, wolves, midgets and incest I can go ten miles east to Geneva.

Followed the book exactly (minus a few character things like Bran saying that he "never falls"). The incest part happens when it should, you are supposed to know about it. As for Tyrion (the dwarf), trust me, just give him a little time to grow *ahem* as a character. I did feel a little creepy seeing Denarys (the blond girl wed to the barbarian) naked, as she is supposed to be 13 or 14.

Overall I'd give it a B-, but if I had gone into it without the books that would higher. As good as I think it could have been to start out such a complicated story, I'll watch more.

I really wonder where I am going to come up on this once I see it (and who knows when that will be, as I am at the mercy of the NBA’s nightly scheduling right now)

It’s so far out of my sweet spot it isn’t funny. Last time I tried something like this was TB which had some fun at first but as soon as Mad Men started rolling after it the startling difference between the quality of the shows made me feel dirtier than the bum that’s camped outside my building right now.

This is going to have a similar problem with The Killing maintaining fantastic thus far at 10PM. I’m more than in on the Killing at this point, especially as a lead up to Breaking Bad Season this summer.

That said, HBO really really needs this to work, because AMC is just slaughtering them. I’ll give it a rip but am pretty much expecting to have about the same reaction as Peeks.

Although Hiko made it through all the books, so it can’t be as gay as TB.

Haven't watched it yet, but if it stays near the books it should be nothing like LOTR. The "fantasy" part of this fantasy should be very low-key.

And those books have more incest, nudity, rape, and disembowlment per square page than any other I've read.

BTW - the dwarf is the shit in the books... later.

Book one (Game of Thrones) is the best, but the 2nd and 3rd book are really good too (minus a boring story line here or there). The 4th book... dude needs an editor to tell him to sit the fuck down, not every word you write needs to make the final print.

5th book apparently comes out this summer after only 7 short years hiatus. Maybe books 6 & 7 will be available by the time I'm pinching nurse-ass in the rest home.

Advice for anyone deciding to read the books: Don't get too attached to any of the characters. And I mean anyone.

Basically, Viserys is a twat. He was second or third in line for the throne before the current king (fat laughy guy) overthrew them. He wants to barbarians to help him win his throne back. Incest was common in their family line.

Speaking of incest and dwarves, does anyone know why six-fingered dwarfism is more common in the Amish than in the regular population? Lack of genetic variability and incest.

He probably gets butt raped to death by Drogo (I have no idea what his first name is, it sounds like "Carl", but not too many barbarians named that).

I'm also curious as to what dude meant by saying "You don't want to wake the dragon". And then there were dragon's eggs, but they were old and turned to stone.

The White Walkers is where it's at for me, bad ass head removing man/monster/thing. Plus they only teased them in that one opening scene.

And I also don't think Stark's kid is dead from that fall. I might be way wrong, since his death would be the catalyst in a feud between the sister fucker (Lannister?) and Stark's house

He's referring to himself. He thinks of himself as a great king, and if you fuck with him, you're "waking the dragon".

But d-bag gets his. He probably wishes he was getting reamed by Drogo when his end comes.

I really dig this show so far. I get that some of you are out because you don't like the "fantasy" type stuff, but I always did. Kind of in my wheelhouse. Honestly, this looks like it has the potential to be the best thing ever done in that genre, LOTR included.

I need to find a website to familiarize myself with the characters a little bit. I'll figure it out eventually, but I'd rather know what the hell is going on when I'm watching it. Anyone got a good site for that?

I'm also curious as to what dude meant by saying "You don't want to wake the dragon". And then there were dragon's eggs, but they were old and turned to stone.

Obviously your history class skipped Carl the Chubby, famed for his funeral pyre sinking under his weight before they could light it.

Khal Drogo. Khal is his title. Khalessi is his (now) wife's title. It equates to something along the lines of chieftain.

A three headed dragon was the symbol for their house, and the family had used dragons to conquer the continent hundreds or thousands of years ago. His anger is the dragon. He is not exactly what we might call "mentally sound."

There are a ton of characters in the series, and a lot of symbolism that they harp on. For instance, the wolfmother was killed by a stag, which also died. The direwolf is the symbol of House Stark, and the stag is the symbol of House Baratheon (the current king). There is a lot made of it in the book as an ill omen.

Let us also remember King Edward II of England (the prince from Braveheart) who ended thusly:

On September the 21st of 1327 King Edward II was murdered in prison by having a red hot poker inserted in his anus.

So was Eddie the 1st "longshanks" in Brave heart and Eddie II was his freakie effeminate son?

And as for the alleged form of death? OK, now THAT is worth some researching.

While I couldn't find corroberation of that form of death, which would make Oz seem like romper room, check THIS out.

Day-um. The lymies were some pretty sick cats when yu got on their bad side:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_II_of_England

Reprisals against Edward's allies began immediately thereafter. The Earl of Arundel, Sir Edmund Fitz Alan, an old enemy of Roger Mortimer, was beheaded on 17 November, together with two of the earl's retainers, John Daniel and Thomas de Micheldever. This was followed by the trial and execution of Despenser on 24 November.[14][15]

Hugh Despenser the younger was brutally executed and a huge crowd gathered in anticipation at seeing him die — a public spectacle for public entertainment. They dragged him from his horse, stripped him, and scrawled Biblical verses against corruption and arrogance on his skin. They then dragged him into the city, presenting him (in the market square) to Queen Isabella, Roger Mortimer, and the Lancastrians. He was then condemned to hang as a thief, be castrated, and then to be drawn and quartered as a traitor, his quarters to be dispersed throughout England. Despenser's vassal Simon of Reading was also hanged next to him, on charges of insulting Queen Isabella.[16]

Edward II's Chancellor, Robert Baldock, was placed under house arrest in London, but a London mob broke into the house, severely beat him, and threw him into Newgate Prison, where he was murdered by some of the inmates.[17]

I don't think Edward I was ever really known as "Longshanks", however on his tomb is carved "Malleus Scotorum" or "Hammer of the Scotts", he also wanted he body boiled and his bones carried at the head of every English army until the Scotts were beaten.

The death account of Edward II was that he was pressed to death on a table.
The part about a red hot poker doesn't appear until about 30 years after his death. It's a mockery of the pleasures he was supposed to enjoy with Piers Gaveston Duke Of Cornwall.

Or because he could execute Level 5 ball tricks with ease. He was also know as "Edward I, King of the Hamburger and the Texas Belt Buckle". FWIW.

CDT is correct, the hot-poker-in-the-anus rumor is unconfirmed (although I've seen it from a couple decent historians). His actual death was witnessed by few, so any of the gruesome ways he might have gone are viable.

Regardless, his reign did not end well.

Edward I was Longshanks from Braveheart, Edward II was the effeminate son that had a damn hot wife that he never touched.
