I've seen this discussed, as to the funniest comedians currently out there, but I'm curious, who would be the F.O.A.T.? I'm thinking Eddie Murphy, Dave Chappelle, Don Rickles, Dangerfield and others would be up there, but who would be up there?

I was wondering the same thing because Carlin's the first (and last) guy I thought of too. I figure it's because he's dead, because an non-moron would have to at least recognize that Carlin is in the conversation, if not the answer. And E0y is not a moron. Kind of a dick sometimes (and I love that about you mang) but not a moron.

Loved Kinison, liked Carlin, but my God I couldn't stand Rodney Dangerfield. Maybe he had some good bits/jokes, and call me a jerk if you want to, but I just couldn't get past his goofy ass looking face. Dangerfield was like a look into the future of a Susan Sarandon and Michael J. Fox offspring.

The Mount Rushmore for me is Kinison, Carlin, Richard Pryor, and Dennis Miller.

With love for Dennis Leary's "No Cure For Cancer" (maybe the funniest stand up show ever), Eddie Murphy's "Raw" and "Delirious", Steven Wright, Lenny Bruce, Mitch Hedberg, Robin Williams, and Richard Lewis. Dice, back in the day, was a bad ass as well.

Current favorites for me are Bill Burr, Louis CK, Sarah Silverman, Jim Gaffigan, Adam Carrolla, Jeff Ross, Chappelle, and Bobby Collins.

I can get down with that Mt. Rushmore. Listening to old Pryor is great, and Eddie doing old Pryor was great as well. Love Robin as well, although you need to have a screw loose somewhere to really enjoy that guy, I've got an extra couple screws if anyone needs em.

Love me some Carlin, but I admit his career spanned from hilarious observation and vicious wordplay to preachy bullshit.

Jerry Seinfeld, anyone? I'd go him, Pryor, Murphy for straight stand-up.

Carolla is changing the game right now with 60-75 minute improvised stand up sets.

I always liked carlin. he was one dude that could be the raunchiest MF'er during a show then go on The Tonight Show and be just as funny clean. Went to a Jake Johansen show once and it was awesome but you don't see him around too much anymore.

and I never got into Carlin. Watched a bunch of different specials of his on HBO from the 80's and remember not laughing very much. I guess I would attribute it to the fact that I was so de-sensitized to the stuff that he had been doing for 20 years through Rock, Chappelle, etc., that it didn't seem that ground-breaking to me.

I'm picking up what Dan Tosh is laying down lately. He doesn't care who he pisses off PC-wise.

Always been a fan of Chris Titus' stand up about his family & divorce, and I like Bob Marley & Nick Dipaola, too. And Maher, of course, For all you wing nuts. ;-)

Rack JB. Chris Titus' Norman Rockwell is Bleedin' is one of the funniest, albiet sad, pieces of standup ever. A complete explosion of Titus' dysfunctional, violent past. Overall, Carlin is still the greatest to me, and I am digging Tosh right now. He somewhat comes off of like a kid who comes from a well-to-do elitest, pompus upbringing, but his delivery is spot on. PC be damned in the truest form. Its like his only goal is to make everyone in his presence as uncomfortable is possible, and in that I see genious.

Depends on the criteria. There are some really talented comedians who really only shined through film (Nielsen), or TV(Jon Stewart), or written word. I'm just going to assume that you are talking stand up only to simplify this.

The pantheon, for me, would be Carlin, Pryor, and Hicks in some order.

Mitch Hedburg was a bit of a wordplay genius. He was truly at his best using paraprosdokians (long word for changing the meaning of a sentence with an anticlimax, such as: "I haven't slept for ten days, because that would be too long.") If you don't pay attention to how clever he was, you'll think him just a dumb stoner.

Current favorites, in no particular order: Dara O'Briain, Tosh, Ricky Gervais, Tim Minchin, Brian Regan, I'm sure there are plenty others I just can't think of too.

He's is the best by far at that IMO. Better n Rodney, Rickles and Redd combined.

So subjective this subject is. I love everything about Howard Stern but think Jackie is a complete hack. Didn't think Artie Lange was in the upper echelon of comedians either.

But loved them both on the show because they were both complete train wrecks as people. THAT made them funny to me. Not their prepared material.

His bit about walking by a dry cleaners is very similar. "I was walking by dry cleaners around midnight and I noticed the sign said "Closed, sorry for the inconvenience. That's OK, no need to be sorry, it would be unreasonable for me to expect you to be open at this hour to iron my shirts. I can stop back at a more appropriate time."

He was great.

Good call up thread on Seinfeld, he is terrific at live stand up, weird how he is so often forgotten for stand up.

Not everyone like jokes. Stand up is so much more since lenny chneged the game. But if you do like a good old fashioned dirty joke, I have no idea how anyone doesn't find jackie hillarious.

Carlin would stand alone based on career and amount of funny material.

Pryor was the Gale Sayers of stand-up. His first concert was the funniest 90 minutes I have ever seen.

No one can match those 2 IMO.

I also think Bill Cosby was very funny, his "Himself" concert rings so true to those of us who are parents. Very funny.

Another great (and dirty) stand-up was Redd Foxx. I saw him live around the 1980 period, and he was funny!

And then that episode just kept hitting you left and right.

Community didn't hit the sweet spot for me last night. I expect greatness from it with every episode and that one fell way short. Which is weird since I enjoyed it so much as I was watching it, but there wasn't really wasn't anything memorable. But that show's gotten to a point where I can watch those characters drink paint thinner and still care about them.

We replayed the opening 4x last night. Swanson is the balls. The episodes with him and his ex are fucking amazing.
