It's part Short Mans Syndrome, part trying to endear himself to a fan base that he knows have just completely tuned out the Indians (Joe Fan at least) because of their perception that the Dolan's don't care about winning, and only about making $.
Sure ... he wants to win. He wants to profit more. The two go hand in hand to a large degree, even more so with the raised stakes of the casino coming to town less than a half mile from The Q.
Again, the fan base will start to see his true colors after 2-3 seasons of 55-60 losses.

I'm conflicted. His attitude has proved itself to be ridiculous over the past year (and I'd even include the long-standing little things like the stupid entertainment overload they have at the Q). Between the LeBron letter (a lot of fun at the time but Gund's classy Boozer letter in '04 looks a million times better in hindsight), all of the tweets pimping these random young scrubs to ridiculous levels, and barely dropping ticket prices for next year, I'm getting a little fed up. I'm all for keeping a positive attitude about the future but I don't think he's properly acknowledged what a rusty coathanger abortion the last 10 months have been.
But at the same time, the guy has put his money where his mouth is just about every time he's had the chance. Paying eight figures for a low lottery pick in a weak draft is just about unheard of and is this team's only real chance to get better. And while Swerb is right in that this is all to make money (which is true for just about any team), he strikes me as someone who genuinely wants to give his customers a good product too (at least for the Cavs, mortgages are a different story).

As the picture becomes more clear with this guy, I disagree. It is the same short sighted type of move that led to swapping out entire rotations of guys in trades at the deadlines for a marginal improvement of the roster.
If overpaying for a draft pick, to be able to acquire someone that is not considered to be a difference maker is trying to win, I might wish he started to try to lose.

You're right in general (i.e. Jamison trade) but in this trade, Baron had the exact same contract length as Mo. So, Gilbert basically paid cash for the pick. I really don't see the downside unless you think $4M of cap room in Cleveland, Ohio will actually make a difference over the next two years. All I'm saying is that stockpiling draft picks seems like our best shot at respectability and Gilbert seems willing to spend the requisite amount to make it happen. I'll actually be more impressed if he uses the trade exception to get another lotto pick next year. Again, I'm conflicted and maybe it's just Gilbert preying on my Dolan distaste, like Swerb said. I just respect the fact that he's making an effort.
Now, if you think the team's previous moves may have caused too big of a crater to escape, I can't really disagree but that's a different argument.

What if flipping Mo next year could land you a young wing player, better than the guy you are going to get at #8?

I'm with you. Gordon Gund took the high road, if Gilbert wants to take swipes at haters like Dwyer more the power to him.

• Rival executives are watching with great interest as the Cavaliers take an unorthodox approach to rebuilding after the departure of LeBron James. The Cavs have embarked on what one executive called "a rich man's rebuild," taking on Baron Davis' contract in exchange for a prime first-round pick from the Clippers. Look for the Cavs to explore more ways to acquire high picks by taking on money around the draft. Though rival executives believe Cleveland will re-examine its deadline pursuit of Richard Hamilton after the season, a person familiar with the organization's thinking said the team isn't comfortable at the moment with Hamilton's two years and $25 million remaining. Either way, the risk for the Cavs, who would have six first-round picks in the next three drafts if they took on Hamilton or another high-priced veteran for another pick, is that their payroll will be much higher than the typical rebuilding team's. Thus, GM Chris Grant and assistant GM David Griffin will have to hit on those picks. For the record, I like their chances. Either way, it's an interesting example of a team playing to its advantages even in a disadvantaged small market where their resources to acquire picks far outweigh their ability to attract free agents.

You guys are retarded. Look at the Presti and Pritchard models, he's doing a slighly more expensive version of them. Stop blowing what isn't worth blowing. Especially Presti with Kurt Thomas.

TMLP: It's amazing, how knowledgeable you fans are here in Cleveland. You're the best!!! This organization will do anything to win. I also want to remind you about how great it's going to be when the new casino opens up at the Higbee building. That casino will make everyone on 4th & 6th streets a ton of money. It will bring top technology firms to Cleveland. This town will be "The Place To Be" in the midwest.
TMLP's puppet: Let's go to the phone lines, Mr G.
Caller from Shaker Hts: Dan, you're the best, I have so much faith in you. What exactly is the trade exception, sir?
TMLP: Well, we received that exception because of Mr James and his decision. We can sign someone with it, if we want. That's a good thing to have. Next question?
Caller from North Ridgeville: Golly, you've done so much for this franchise and I know you'll take us to the promised land. I'd love to know what you think about how the "starpower" is changing the league, good sir?
TMLP: Nobody has ever won in this league going after stars before, right Puppet?
Puppet: No general, um Mr G.
TMLP: Not really sure what's so great about Miami, anyhow? What have they ever done in sports? Besides it's pretty much just the players from the '03-'04 drafts that want to play together. Mo Williams just said the other night that he misses this place. Plenty of players want to play here.
Puppet: And don't forget that you built Cleveland Clinic Court, sir. Let's go to the next caller.
Caller from Cleveland: How do you like Coach Scott and do you have a timeframe for him? By the way, I think your awesome, you should be the one called King around here.
TMLP: Thank you for the kind words, my son. Look, Byron Scott is worshipped around the NBA and I am very impressed with him. I want significant improvement, but I’m not sure when that’ll be. Next caller.
Caller from Parma: Great show down at the Q this weekend with the tourney, Ol’ Great One. Who do you want to see in a Cavs’ uniform after this year’s draft?
TMLP: I’m not allowed to say anything per the league’s rules. Who would you like to see?
Caller from Parma: Oh, whoever you get is fine by me.
Puppet: We will now go to a caller from Akron.
Caller from Akron: Hey you SOB, What makes you think the team will be worthy next year to keep us paying you outrageous prices for seats, you fucker? A 4% drop in prices is ridiculous, you should let us in for free, you bastard. You had one of the lowest payrolls in the league this year and you want us to throw you jack to keep this kind of product on the court, cocksucker. I’ve been a ticket holder for 36 years and I see it taking another 4 years minimum until we’re good again. Hell, I might be dead by then and I sure as shit hope you are Danno.
TMLP: Sir, I feel your pain, please talk to your ticket representative and we’ll upgrade you seats and give you a free Ipod.
Puppet: Wow sire, let’s look at the computer and see who else is out there with a proper question for you? Go ahead Lakewood?
Caller from Lakewood: Is there any truth to you selling the team after your casino is built, you stud you.
TMLP: Nothing could be farther from the truth. I’m here forever Cleveland!!! Next caller?
Caller from Bratenahl: Hi Danny, remember me sweetie, I’m the exterminator who has VIP seats. I love you, I love the Cavs. I didn’t know anything about basketball just 5 little years ago and now I never miss a game. I have tons of CEO clients who are always asking me for tickets.
TMLP: Thanks for the kind words, I remember you. Hey, how’s business? What bugs are the most popular right now?
At this point, my wife removed the luger from my mouth, gave me my blood pressure medicine and hung up the phone for me
