Interesting notes from OZone's Brandon Castel on today's start to OSU's 6 a.m. workouts.

He says Rod Smith looks like Superman...freshman Joel Hale may be a pleasant surprise at DT...Storm Klein is huge in the upper body....John Simon is ripped...Carlos Hyde was puking in the trash can....lots more...

BTW, if Smith is the second coming of #27, then what happens to Herron, Hyde, Berry, and Hall?......... Good god what an embarassment of riches.

If Smith lives up to the hype, then Hyde is on the next bus out of Columbus. Hall would stay as scatback/KR/PR (I don't think he'll transfer as a junior) but Berry may transfer as a RS Sophmore.

This spring game will be fascinating to be able to see Hall and Berry compete against Smith and Boom... or however it stacks up.

The universal praise for Rod Smith (and the pictures I have seen of this kid) lead me to believe that he is in fact the real deal and the real front runner for the 2011 starting position. Tress loves his seniors, especially Dan Herron, but 5 games is a long, LONG time for a guy with Smith's reported ability to entrench himself. This could turn into a Lou Gehrig-type story about a guy seizing a position and never returning it. I like Boom, and he has been a solid to above average back, but damnit this is OSU and no one will ever confuse Boom with Keith Byars, Chris Wells, Eddie George, Archie Griffin, Robert Smith, etc. (maybe Raymont Harris, Butler B, Pearson or Pittman would be appropriate comparisons). At least Boom played himself out of the Lydell Ross/Maurice Hall category.

One thing is for sure, due to the Tat 5, someone will have an opportunity to TAKE that job.
