Would 79 indiana state count?

I know they were rated highly throughout the year, had a number 1 seed and a fantastic GOAT of a player in Larry Bird. But, for the Sycamores, that was a once in a lifetime season, and to be on the cusp of winning a Nat'l title from there point of view over traditional powers, I feel makes them worthy of being included in the underdog bracket.

awesome to see '02 KSU included, I recall when I first started to really follow the tourney, that was such an awesome story to see play out.

oh, my old man is still pissed about the '86 LSU tigers, pointing out that they lucked into playing a game on campus against the boilermakers and purdue during that time period would often times be stuck in similar scenarios.

I see your argument about Indiana State, but I think a tournament Cinderella story generally requires an element of surprise in the tournament itself. It might have been a surprise that Indiana State got the best player in the country, but by tournament time, everyone knew they were the real deal. Penn being in the Final Four the same year had to be the bigger shocker.
