Interesting column from Woj that hits on a Cavs/Pistons deal that fell apart at the deadline, and also the struggles that former Cavs assistant John Kuester is having in the Motor City.

I have no idea what Rip Hamilton is thinking. He, allegedly, could have taken $18 million in a buyout from Cleveland and signed where ever he wanted. This would have given him playing time, which I dont see him getting in Detroit anytime soon. Or he could have come here with Baron Davis and tried to help get this team turned around, but he didnt "want the minutes." This situation really amazes me.

Works for everyone else. Though I doubt getting Kuester axed will change anything for the Pistons. That's just a horrible collection of overpaid role-players and aged vets.

Been said by many of the smarter people here, but this "action" has been the norm for disgruntled NBA (all sports?) players since at least the mid 90's.

FWIW: had Gilbert taken on Hamilton's contract as well my wondering about his desire to spend his way through the rebuild without his money sucking asset would have been answered.

The simple fact that he was willing to throw down 30 million (12 for Baron and 18 for Rip) for two first rounders should clearly display that to you, but that wouldn't fit your "worst 4 owners in the league" thingy.

I doubt Gilbert would have done both deals. The Baron deal and the Rip deal. That's a lot of scratch for a couple picks with not good odds to be in the top three in a shitty draft.

But then again, he does have a raging case of Short Mans Syndrome, and does have a casino coming like a quarter mile from The Q.

Spending on the Cadavers is now tantamount to an investment in his casino.

Without knowing the exact terms of the lottery protection I'm not sure how great of a deal this is. You just bought an unprotected for around 12 million. Seems you pay $26ish million for a protected 2012?

Not only that, but IMO Baron Davis has more upside in the final 2 years then Hamilton. While Hamilton's scoring punch has been more steady at this point of his career he is one dimensional in that nature. Davis can still run the team. Both have gotten the reputation as cancer, so I won't entertain debates of work ethic/attitude.

IMO this would answer two questions. One that Gilbert's infatuation with Detroit is still very strong, and that he is willing to continue spending money. The point is how he is spending. Not just to make us some average team, but he is adding payroll and tying significant long term assets to them.
