Chris Broussard reported the Cavs got in on the action with Denver and NJ. They had the framework of a trade hammered out that would have sent Troy Murphy's expiring and two first rounders to the Cavs. But the Cavs wanted Golden State's '12 first rounder that New Jersey currently owns, and the Nets aren't eager to part with that.

So it looks like this trade will happen without the Cavs' participation.

Playing Dunphy's advocate: Depends on when the two firsts are. If one of them isn't the '11 pick and the Nets actually fit some talent around Melo and Lopez, then you're looking at picks in the JJ range.

Then again, the GSW pick is lotto-protected. That really shouldn't have been much of a deal-breaker.

Hamilton, Billups, Anthony, Lopez, and company maybe become the third seed in the East. That's probably being generous. Hamilton is on the bench in Detroit and Billups doesn't want to leave Denver. That doesn't even address selling out your future in Favors and the draft picks, or the fact you are giving up a very servicable point guard.

No one knows what the follow the leader crowd of young NBA players will do next. You want to mortgage your future on the least likely to be a Championship Leader of that class?

We had something similar. We referred to those types of shots as "Otis Birdsong's" as it was always thought by our group that he had a penchant for trying shots with high degrees of difficulty.

Curry is an 11 million dollar ending deal. Danilo Gallinari is a 3rd year player averaging 16ppg and 5 rebounds. Felton is at 17ppg and 9 dimes. Then there is the other unnamed starter and the first rounder.

New York receives 'Melo and Billups. Melo being the FA that according to all the noise would sign an extension to play in New York and Billups has a team option for next year.

Eh, this makes sense if it makes them a title contender this year (I don't support that IMO). Otherwise wait and sign him as an outright FA, and keep Danilo and Felton and the unamed starter and the #1.

Hold on to him and hope he decides to take the certainty of signing before the new CBA, also there seems to be momentum towards having a franchise designation. Their franchise is not in a position to reload. If Melo leaves they are going to have to completely rebuild anyway. Felton, Gallinari, Nene, Ty Lawson and the 20th pick in the draft aren't competing for shit.

The Nets would be giving Denver the Warriors' top 7-protected first rounder next year in this Melo deal. I doubt the Cavs taking on Murphy's contract(expiring this year) would be enough to make them send it here in a 3 way trade. Would adding one of the Heat first rounders be enough? That's the exact kind of pick that we should be targeting with this trade exception(probably in the #10 range), make it happen. Maybe we could take on Al Harrington and the Birdman for them instead? Both have 3-4 year deals that they probably want to get rid of.
