Iowa football scandle

Unread postby jb » Sat Jan 29, 2011 10:40 am

ESPN reporting that 13 Iowa football players have tested positive for an illegal drug an dthis is tied to the recent hospitalizations from winter conditioning. This is clearly more than an isolated set of individuals.

While Ferentz's status may seem rock solid, this will rock the program and could result in a major setback -- perhaps the first major series of infractions based on PEDs in a major program. Given the historic overachievement of Iowa athletes it isn't impossible to believe.

JB...not sure where you're getting the info about positive tests for illegal drugs, because this report from ESPN says the opposite....that the results were negative.

Either way, you're right that it's a scandal, and Ferentz has much to answer for, including being late to return to Iowa City from his recruiting trip. Worse yet is the quote from the Iowa strength and conditioning guy before one day's workout that "we're going to find out today who really wants to be here"

Rhabdomyolysis is some serious shit. I've heard of it resulting from major whole body trauma or injury....like a fall from a tree, or a college kid accidentally tipping a Coke machine over on himself...or a car crash or explosion...but never from just over exertion in a workout situation, but Wiki says (so it must be true) extreme physical exertion can be a cause in itself. You can survive the fall or the accident, but then the rhabdo can kill you later.

Interesting too, that you bring up Iowa's overachievement. You may have seen the same article I saw yesterday about five college football programs that are "doing more with less" in terms of success on the field without the high-ranking recruiting classes. Iowa makes the list...

Edit: Pat Forde is all over Ferentz in this piece. With all the drug issues and now this...I'm not sure Ferentz can survive. Not sure he should.

Danny, I could have read the crawl report wrong on espn. I thought it read there were illegal drugs. So my bad if I did and thanks for the better info.

Have the Browns named an OL coach yet? Kirk was the best in team history. Silk purse from sows' ears.
