Remaining Undefeated Teams

Unread postby CAVSTRIBEBROWNSin07! » Wed Dec 15, 2010 3:23 am

Every college basketball season I find myself checking the standings fairly often, counting down who the remaining undefeated teams are. I figured I may as well start tracking it here. I'll try and keep this updated as teams fall.

With both Tennessee and Louisville getting upset tonight, that exclusive list is down to its 12 finalists, including 3 Ohio schools.

Undefeated D1 Teams (AP ranking in parenthesis)

Cleveland St 12-0 (NR)
SDSU 11-0 (#11)
Duke 10-0 (#1)
Syracuse 10-0 (#5)
BYU 10-0 (#16)
Cincinnati 9-0 (NR)
Ohio St 8-0 (#2)
Kansas 8-0 (#3)
UConn 8-0 (#4)
UCF 8-0 (NR)
Baylor 6-0 (#9)
Northwestern 6-0 (NR)

The Huge East has 3 remaining undefeateds, the Big 12, Big 10, and MWC each have a pair of teams, while the ACC, Conference USA, and Horizon League each have 1.

My gut tells me Cincinnati is the next to fall, on December 18 vs Oklahoma.

Northwestern lost last night to St. John's.

UCF lost on Saturday to Houston, and Cincinnati predictably lost to Villanova, leaving us with just 5 remaining teams without a loss, all of whom are ranked amongst the top 6 teams in the country

#1 Duke 15-0
#2 OSU 16-0
#3 Kansas 15-0
#4 Syracuse 16-0
#6 SDSU 17-0

The next time one of these teams faces a top 25 opponent is next Monday when Syracuse has to travel to #5 Pitt in what should be one of the games of the year.

I am not a college hoops nut but isn't this kind of late in the season to have 5 undefeated D-1 teams?

I was wondering about that myself. I'm sure if it goes on for much longer Elias will release a stat.

And then there were 4. Duke falls to FSU, while both OSU and Kansas survive scares. (I wonder if the top 3 teams have ever lost on the same day?) Ironically, ESPN ran a piece yesterday morning about how Duke has the 4th best chance any team has ever had this late in the season of running the table.

All 4 teams have tough tests in the next few games. We're down to...

OSU 17-0 (next 4 games: Penn St, Iowa, @#16 Illinois, #8 Purdue)
Kansas 16-0 (@Baylor, #14 Texas, @Colorado, #20 Kansas St)
Syracuse 17-0 (Cincinnati, @#5 Pitt, #7 Villanova, Seton Hall)
SDSU 18-0 (@New Mexico, Air Force, @#10 BYU, Wyoming)

Down to just 3 teams, as Syracuse (pretty predictably IMO)lost today at Pitt.

#1 OSU (next 4: Iowa, @#16 Illinois, #8 Purdue, @ Northwestern)
#2 Kansas (#14 Texas, @Colorado, #20 Kansas St, @Texas Tech)
#6 SDSU (Air Force, @#10 BYU, Wyoming, @Colorado St)

OSU showing it can win games close even when it's veteran leader has a awful game.

And Jared Sullinger is the real deal. Incredible player.

Just Ohio State and SDSU left in the race to be the last undefeated standing. Both are in for stiff tests in their next game, as the Buckeyes host Purdue on Tuesday, followed by SDSU at 1 loss BYU (Jimmer Fredette coming off 42 point game) the next night.
