Strong rumors that Randy Shannon will be the new DC - the motivation for this hire is primarily to keep recruiting momentum and keep all those defensive blue chip recruits (and there are a lot of them) that have started looking around. He was a big fail as a HC; maybe his niche is as a DC but it remains to be seen if he will keep his Cover 2 is going to play in the Big 12 with all those spread offenses.

Major Applewhite will probably join Muschamp at UF if he is not at least co-OC and does not get primary play-calling responsibilities. He'd be a huge loss, IMO.

Looks like Muschamp has hired Kirby Smart from Bama as his DC. Solid pick there, off to a good start.


Also, I think a Shannon hire by Mack would be great for Texas. He was a very serviceable DC and a great recruiter, could really be a spark for Texas.

Lots of people assumed he'd leave before Mack Brown retired. He can't be expected to wait around forever, and Brown was making no noises about hanging it up.

I think that the day Mack Brown hung a Joe Paterno picture on his office wall was the day that Muschamp read the tea leaves.

The whole HCIW thing was not really about eventual succession; it was about keeping Muschamp as long as possible. He was very, very close to taking the Tennessee job a year ago.

In a way I can't hardly blame him; UF is a top 3 coaching job, it's in the S-E-C!!! S-E-C!!, and he has a history in Gainesville.

And it looks like Randy Shannon was just a smokescreen; Teryl Austin or Everett Withers will probably be the next DC at UT.
