CLEVELAND -- The idea of straightening the Cuyahoga River to allow freighters to bypass Collision Bend has been discussed for more than 100 years, but a local community development group believes the age-old plan might give Dan Gilbert the extra room he wants to build his Cleveland casino.
Digging a new river channel across the neck of Collision Bend would create an island out of the jutting piece of land and allow large ships carrying iron ore and limestone to bypass the 16-acre site where Gilbert plans to build the Casino.
Is this a better idea than filling in 29 ft of the river bend? Who pays the bill?($37 mill)

1/2 hour saved each way means a lot of fuel saved and reduced carbon emmissions, Bigger ships could get in, while were at it lets do a little more tweeking further up the river (near drydock road) and move that port we want off the lakefront back to the industrial wasteland where the mills are, every hear of intermodal hubs? theres a ton of existing rail line down there, 490,77,71 all right there. Wow a port with easy access to 3 interstates, major rail, that doesn't sound very useful.....ahhhh this truly could be the kick off of a series of projects that turn this ship around (fitting) and get crooked cuyahoga back on track. 37 Million is not a lot, and that's a projection based on inflation and back in 1991 there were buildings that are since gone. I know where we have the cash sitting..for a worthless med mart that won't ever get built (but it may if we re develop the river and lake front). The Port Authority can afford to pay for this too, because the end result will benefit their coffers. Look at an aerial view of this site, its just plain logical, I have been preaching this for years
