Leslie Nielsen Dies

Unread postby Triple-S » Sun Nov 28, 2010 11:20 pm

Leslie Nielsen, who made audiences laugh with his ridiculous seriousness and deadpan deliveries in the absurd scenes of comedy films like Airplane! and The Naked Gun has died. He was 84.

His agent confirmed that the actor died Sunday near his home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., surrounded by his "lovely wife and friends" at 5:34 p.m. ET, due to complications of pneumonia.

Nielsen had been hospitalized for nearly two weeks as a result of pneumonia, his agent said.

"Just in this last 48 hours, the infection has gotten too much," his nephew Doug Nielsen told Canadian radio station CKNW. "He just fell asleep and passed away."

Mayor: Now Drebin, I don't want any trouble like you had on the South Side last year, that's my policy.
Frank: Well, when I see five weirdos, dressed in togas, stabbing a man in the middle of the park in full view of a hundred people, I shoot the bastards, that's *my* policy!
Mayor: That was a Shakespeare-In-The-Park production of 'Julius Caesar,' you moron! You killed five actors! Good ones!

today we just lost one of the funniest actors of our day :(.

This woman has to be gotten to a hospital.

A hospital? What is it?

It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

Don't call him Shirley :)

Last movie I've seen him in was Scary Movie 4. Talking to the Indian Chief "Hay! how-are-ya. Hay! how-are-ya. Hay how-are-ya."

RIP Leslie.

Leslie Nielsen could have been just another straight-laced character actor for his entire career, and been pretty good at it. He was the captain in "The Poseidon Adventure."

But he was so good at being serious and earnest, it was hilarious when his delivery was framed against an absurd backdrop in "Airplane!" And just like that, a comedic icon was born.

That's what made "Airplane!" so great. Nielsen, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, all these accomplished old-guard dramatic actors deadpanning in this screwball comedy. And all three of them went on to carve a comedic niche in the later portions of their careers. Nielsen was the most successful at it.

They're all gone now. Our loss.

The first Naked Gun is probably the comedy I've watched more than any other besides Caddyshack, Animal House, Airplane, and Old School. A classic. Made even more classic after Nordberg started killing people in real life.

The scene where he's umping the game and calling everything a strike to hurry up and end it ... classic.

Never realized until later in life how long of an acting career Nielsen had as a serious actor. Was reborn with his comedic career. RIP.

I recommend adding the Police Squad series to your Netflix Q. I don't remember how many episodes there were but it was some funny stuff pre-Naked Gun. We will miss you Frank Drebin.

I swear he was just coaching the Meatchicken defense and looked fine on Saturday.

Maybe their suck finally killed him? I thought it was an odd career choice.

I always loved the intro in 33 1/3 when OJ is doing a touchdown dance in the background with the babies, and is about to spike one. The Naked Gun series is one that I will always sit down and watch when I see it on TV. RIP.
