Zuffa has finally decided to merge the WEC into the UFC. The lightweight divisions will be merged, the two titles brought together in a unification bout. Jose Aldo and Dominick Cruz will go from being WEC champions to UFC champions at their respective weightclasses.
This is a great move. There will no longer be stale UFC events in between big cards featuring title bouts. With 7 weight classes and the talk of introducing a flyweight (125) division, there will be plenty of big fights to load up cards that would normally only offer title eliminator or contender bouts for their main events.
This is also great for the fighters who will survive the cuts that must take place in order to provide space for the new roster. The WEC fighters who maxed out at 25K to show and 25K to win will finally be paid the money they work so hard for. I can't wait to see Jose Aldo on a card that also has bigger UFC fighters.
This is great for Zuffa, and may also further marginalize other MMA organizations. Casual fans only familiar to UFC fighters will be introduced to the featherweight and bantamweight classes. Leonard Garcia will reenter the octagon as a must see brawler. Guys like Miguel Torres, Jose Aldo, Uriah Faber, Dominick Cruz, and the Korean Zombie will provide much-needed depth to the UFC brand.
I love this move.
