Yes today is Bastille Day

and since I'm a quarter French I'm making a thread on it whether you Yankee boys like it or not :)

This day is a national holiday in France and commemorates the storming of the Bastille (a prison fortress) in 1789. Although there were only 7 prisoners incarcerated at the time the assault on the Bastille was a symbolic act of rebellion against the absolutist monarchy. 3 weeks after the storming, feudalism was abolished. Shortly after that, one of the most important documents of the French Revolution came into being. Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen
It proclaimed equal rights for all men and an end to aristocracy special privileges (for example ending taxation exemption)
The monarchy was restricted and all people were given the freedom to take part in legislative process as well as freedom of speech and freedom of the press being granted.

Funny thing about the Marquis de Sade is he was transferred from the Bastille to an insane asylum for shouting anti-Monarchist invectives just days before the storming.
