Bush tried, with a flawed proposal, to fix SS, which he should get credit for. I can't remember the last time the Democrats have done anything to make SS viable in the long term. Changes have to be made or else the program, along with Medicare, will inevitably bankrupt this nation.

I'm never going to get back the money i've paid into it. I don't want to pay into it anymore. I'd rather just keep my money and put it in my nest egg. SS has run it's course.

Just think if everyone got that 6.2% tax to put in to their 401K instead of going to the worlds largest ponzi scheme. SS has its useful aspects, but its just one more way the government thinks they need to take care of their citizens instead of letting them take care of themselves. The government shouldnt be in the business of handing out pensions to everyone over a certain age... they already have enough pensions to worry about with just their employees.

Is the government even legally bound to pay out social security?

ETA: Flemming v Nester, nobody has any contractual rights to social security benefits, IOW the government is not obligated to pay it to anybody? Yet it is law that we must pay into it.

That case said that the payment of SS does not form a contract, and that SS benefits cannot be considered "property". But the government can't just take away the benefits without due process. There are protections there.
