This is the only type of gun I am qualified to handle. We need a well armed citizenry. Before things get scary- bad I might be looking into some training. Not sure at what point I make that step (food riots?), but things seem to be getting exponentially worse. I never thought I would even be thinking this way.

How expensive is the 30-30 ammo though? The .45 LC is ridiculous.

I am a super bad ass. I have a Remington 11-87. :guns: I know so little about guns I am not even sure if I have to mention that it is a 12 gauge. My dad also recently gave me a 20 gauge because the wife thought the 12 was a little bit too much gun for her. I also have a 22 rifle (no idea what kind) he gave me to play around with. I don't really shoot that much. Hunted a bit, but it isnt really my thing. I enjoy trap shooting so that is mainly what my gun ownership is geared to. I am not sure of names, brands or anything other than how to load and use them properly. My dad had a handgun he was set to give me that he bought from the police department, but gave it to my sister because I couldnt have it in Chicago. Now I am too cheap to buy one because I wouldn't use it that much.
In the end, we're all "only for a limited time," you guys.

I got turned onto this site, http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ a coupla years ago.....I've used it a few times and been very happy with it....

I like the reviews. I've found out these gun guys don't piss around, if it's shit they will say so....

So yep, ammo price is a big consideration for me....

This is the TT-33 pistol i'm looking for. They killed alot of Nazis with these... Alot. Looks wise it resembles a Colt 1911 .45, but interanlly I think it's different. It fires a devastating 7.62x25mm round.

First thing I did was look for ammo, at the link I supplied....seems reasonable enough......and reloadable...

Looks like it would be a nice shooter.....

As Tribe Zone said, "Cheaper than Dirt" has 30-30 ammo for as little as $13.21/20-soft point or as much as $32/20 for premium stuff.

Ziner: Put an 18 1/2" barrell on that 11-87 and that was the gun that replaced our cruiser 870s in the late 80s/early 90s. A nice tactical shotgun......................till I got my hands on a Benelli.........

$13 for 20 rounds is pretty pricey. That's the downside to Lever Actions, if you're not buying a .22, you're gonna pay out the ass. To be honest, i'm not that impressed with that site's prices, i'd probably be better off waiting for a gun show.

Lemme ask you this Dem, I assume you've shot a few .223 rifles, have you ever used steel cased ammo? If so did you have any problems? I'm a bit nervous about using it in my M&P 15, some of the reviews on that site say it's fine, others are saying they have had cases jam in the barrel. Which is insane. I have no problem using the Ruskie Wolf and Bear ammo in my $150 SKS (with almost no problems, it's dirty and a few misfires), but putting it through a $800 Christmas present is a different story. I've put about 300 brass cassed rounds through it so far with no problems, it's just starting to get broke in.

Anyone else with experience with steel cased .223 ammo, please let me know, i'm all ears.

Mossberg 500 20 gauge. Inexpensive but has killed at least one deer a year for ten 10 years. Don't even take the rifled barrel and the scope off anymore. I use it the day I site it in and the day I kill a deer.

Remington 870 Wingmaster 12 gauge- Was the old man's and the first gun I hunted with (killed my first deer with it with open sights and smooth barrel).

Ithaca Model 37 (Featherweight) 16 gauge pump. Not a better rabbit hunting gun made. Light, great action on the pump.

Knight .50 cal Black Powder- Not a fan of black powder just due to maintenance needs. But 100grain in this gun is 125 yards of accurate.

Model Unknown 410- Little two shot 410 for squirrel. I'd actually like to cut this down and keep it much for home protection. The noise and scatter would be sufficient in a pinch I think. The fact the old man bought it for me when I turned 16 has probably kept me from doing that.

Taurus .357 4" barrel- Always fires when squeezed, nice to shoot the .38 fmjs through it relatively cheaply. Gotta have the speedloaders with the revolvers.

I'd love to walk into a cheap .22 rifle for plinking and for squirrel hunting if anyone knows someone selling one.

Ruger 10/22, man. They go for around $120 and are the best Semi Auto .22 for the price. I saw the Mossberg version at a Gander Moutain for $100.

What you really need is a Mosin Nagant to hunt squirrels. 7.62x54mm of Russian fury. You can find these monsters for $75-$100 at any gun show. The ammo is cheap is wrapped in wax paper and stuffed in tins in 5 round bundles. It's also corrosive. Kicks like a mule, makes a Mauser feel like a .22. I got a gel pad for the butt stock and it's not so bad. You hit a squirrel with that round he'll disappear.

I would say try a box. Yes, I tried them, but not in your gun.

If their first time fired, they should work fine....alot of times the reloaded shells have expanded the cartridge so much, problems happen...

Many reloaders just keep filling them and firing them....and never compensate for expansion....

Me, I stay away from lead and always go with jacketed bullets....friggin lead dirties a gun like nothing else, pay the extra, stick with jacketed..

CDT:

In truth, I have done little sport shooting and NO hunting with .223. Our tactical teams originally shot Ruger Minis and M-16 shorties (but that was 5.56). But that was all factory ammo/brass casings. We then switched to HK MP5s.

I shot a little of the Wolf ammo (for training) out of my duty gun and had a few problems, so I don't use it anymore.
For training now, I'll use American Eagle or Speer 230 FMJ. For defensive ammo, I won't use anything but Winchester SXT, although I've heard that Remington's Golden Saber is pretty good. I aslo have about a hundred rounds of Glaser Safety Slugs.

The varmint hunting I used to do a hundred years ago was with a .243 Sako that had a Redfield/3-9X.

Peeker643: CDT is spot on with his recommendation of the Ruger 10/22. Best 22 I have ever seen,IMO. Also seen it tricked out in a ton of "tactical" variations.

Thanks for the tips on the .223 ammo, dem, and TZ.

I'll probably just buy 50 rounds and see how it cycles. If it sucks I wont use it anymore. I like the fact I can shoot the hotter 5.56 or the .223. I plan to only shoot the .223 for now, since it's lower grain means less wear and tear and i'm only target shooting.

I love the Ruskie Bear and Wolf 7.62x39 ammo for my SKS. It's works great and the only better value is to buy surplus from a gun show. I bought 1000 Romainian rounds that were steel cased and laquered and that Norinco ate 'em up with zero problems. They're dirty, but I clean my guns after every time out.

The CCI Blazer 9mm ammo is another cheap-O brand that i've had no problems with. It and the UMC ammo is just about all I use in my Beretta. Shoots great at the range, no accuracy problems and no jams or misfires. My buddy uses the same in his Glock and it works great for him too. At home I keep Winchester Hollow Points in the mag for home defense. I had some +P HPs but decided they're kinda overkill.

Hey CD, no problem, it's not to often we get to discuss shooting... :salute:

.223 is a nice round. I was finding out the difference in brands made for a slight difference in accuracy....if your scoping them in for distance, I suggest stick to one brand....

I'm pretty thrilled with my Contender.....especially when you look at all the barrels you can buy for it (interchangeable)

http://www.tcarms.com/firearms/g2ContenderPistols.php

Got to use a 45/70 barrel.. :wha?: ...jeeeeeez, talk about a stopper.

The what to carry subject has gone full circle:

Everyone is aware of the obvious in that a .357 or .45 cal cannon has more knockdown power than a .38 or 9mm...wow! profound!

Then it becomes yeah but the ammo is expensive and hard to find...

No one is talking about the actual likelyhood of ever having to pull whatever it is you're carrying out of your pocket for anything other than a change of pants

I'll stick by my long standing suggestions that:

The knockdown power of a .357 or .45 vs a high velocity .38 or 9mm round is not so much that it is worth the weight of carrying or the expense of shooting regularly which, BTW, should be your goal.

Accuracy is far more effective than caliber and a snub nose .38 is perfect, esp in summer. You can get an inside the pants holster and no one is the wiser A snub nose .357 is virtually uncontrolable for repititous firing

I also carry a 10 shot 9mm but again, the weight issue depending on dress

If accuracy is a problem I'd suggest a little .410 ga 2 shot derringer

Here's some links I have on ammo & guns. You can also buy bulk ammo from Cabela's FYI

I'm sitting on over 5000 rounds each of 9mm and 38 hollow point right now, inexpensive and available.

FTR, Speer Gold Dots are the best self defense round out there but, I've got some Hornady 110 gr ftx that are scary to even look at, let alone to see what it does vs a block of wood. I guarantee only one well placed shot would ever be needed...

Handguns:
Springfield XD-9 4"
S&W .357
Spanish-made 1911 .45cal

Long guns:
6.5mm Swed bolt-action
12 ga. pump
.308 lever
30-30 lever
.22 semi

Still feel like I am forgetting something though.

Anyways, MartyM, you might want to check out comparable Glocks too. They run around the same price, similar specs, etc. I love my XD and have hated Glocks, but that is just because the Glock feels weird in my hand, whereas the XD fits naturally. Everyone is different, so handle as many guns as you can before you make your purchase.

At some point i'd like to get a AK-47. I know you can get the Romanian kits minus the upper, for $125 at gun shows. I love Russian firearms, my SKS is Chinese but it's still Russian design. They make guns to last and to be the epitome of reliability. Really want the Tokarev (i'd settle for the Norinco Type-54), maybe a Makarov too at some point.

The AN-94 is a nice too. But they'll probably never be for sale over here.

Just use a longer barrel, problem solved.

I thought liberals didn't like guns or gun ownership (J/K). Here is my list:

M1 Garand
Thompson M1928A1
Type 99 rifle
M1911 pistol

Planning on some of these on my own:

The TT-33 is still in service in the Chinese and North Korean armed forces today. The Tokarev is gaining in popularity with pistol collectors and shooters in the West because of its ruggedness, reliability and ready availability of cheap ammunition (in the US). However, some complaints include poor-quality grips (which are often replaced by the wrap-around Tokagypt 58 grips) and a hand grip which extends at a vertical angle awkward for many Western shooters. Nonetheless, the Tokarev, as well as its variants in 9 mm, is renowned for its simplicity and accuracy.

The TT-33 is not a 1911 clone, however, it employs a much simpler hammer/sear assembly with an external hammer. This assembly is removable from the weapon as a modular unit and includes cartridge guides that provide reliable functioning. The Soviet engineers also added several other features such as locking lugs all around the barrel (not just on top), and made several alterations to make the mechanism easier to produce and maintain. Production even machined the magazine feed lips into the receiver to prevent damage and misfeeds when a distorted magazine was loaded into the magazine well.[4]
The TT-33 is chambered for the 7.62x25mm Tokarev cartridge, which was itself based on the similar 7.63x25mm Mauser cartridge used in the Mauser C96 pistol. Able to withstand tremendous abuse, large numbers of the TT-33 were produced during WWII and well into the 1950s.

This statement about weight and concealment is not to be confused with one earlier about necessary fire power....: )

FUDU, the longer barrell means greater distance, not better aim and accuracy. Only the range and a thousand rounds can solve that problem

Get the .410 2 shot derringer or a snub nosed .38 revolver to carry, a .45 to blow melons apart, a tactical 7 shot 12 ga for home defense

Started shooting with Glocks in college and liked them. I probably spent mor time on the range at Akron then in the classroom and unfortunately had the grades to prove it (Or was it the alcohol?)

Still need to try out the XD though. Father in law has a nice collection that once I married into the family he was happy beacuse now he has someone to pass them along to.

My thinking is the projectile leaves the barrel that much closer to the target with a longer barrel. Call it nit picking but 2" has shown to mean a lot at the range IMPE (in my personal experience). Gentleman who introduced me to guns let me shoot his S&W 4" .357 Magnum, @ a range of 25', probably 3 trips to the range using that weapon. Soon after I purchased the exact same gun, 6" barrel. Continued @ a range of 25', significant difference in my accuracy. @ 50' it was ridiculous how much more accurate I was with my 6" as opposed to his 4". I really got accurate using his .22 S&W with IIRC 8" barrel 10 shot revolver, obviously the .22 caliber helps increase accuracy. If you're aim is off at the tip of the 4" barrel it translates to a much bigger angle at the target (compared to 6" inch), no?

I have no problem admitting you know way more about guns and shooting than I do but I speak from MPE and IIRC was even told that the longer barrel increases accuracy from a gunsmith. :shrug

Weight and concealment have nothing to do with accuracy either FUDU. Meaning that the longer the barrel the less appropriate for concealment. Clearly a longer barrel is better for accuracy. That being the case, strap a .20gauge under your arm and down your leg and be done with it. :dingle:

Concealed carry is clearly designed for up close and personal self-defense. You don't need a sniper rifle. ;-) ;)

I think that's the point FMB was clearly making.

The King of England? No. But we do have bad people over here and i'd rather have a gun and not need it, than need a gun and not have it. What are you gonna do if a criminal breaks into your flat? Kill 'em with your awful food? Throw soccer balls at them? Burn 'em with scalding hot tea?

Not too worried about the King of England but the Muslim world thinks we are the great satan and would like to eliminate us. They are swallowing up Europe from within. Their birth rate is many times greater than other groups. It is a matter of time.

Having a gun might not be such a bad thing when times get tough.

::doh::

So lemme get this straight.

The whole Muslim world wants to destroys us.

They're swallowing up Europe.

They're breeding too much.

It's only a matter of time till they either destroy us or breed us out.

Right O.........
