Whatever, I am not going to cast the first stone, I've said it, however I have tried to get it out of my vocabulary. Said retarded once in front a girl at work who I consider a friend who has a brother with Downs, talk about feeling like an ass. So ever since that I have been trying to cut it out. That said, I do believe the meaning of the world has sort of transformed like when people say "thats gay" or something along those lines. Not PC, but I also feel that most people who use the world "gay" or "retard" aren't actually using them in that way.

BUT... I always thought the word "retarded" could be used to describe something without an allusion to the mentally handicapped... i.e. "His devopment as a shooter was retarded by a shoulder injury." Meaning slowed or hindered, not mentally handicapped.

As always, it's about context... and I hate to see a good word dragged through the mud.

I understand where you're coming from. To be honest, I don't really concern myself with what's socially acceptable. Now that doesn't mean I go walking down the street yelling "retard" or what not. At home with my friends we say some of the most awful things to each other, then we laugh about it. My Jewish buddy calls me a "dumb kraut sasquatch" all the time, so I like to get his attention by rubbing two pennies together. I say offensive shit, it's just not a big deal to me.

I hear ya, CDT, my japanese friend and I trade insults that would make most people's hair curl. Just the most insulting, insensitive stuff but we end up in tears because of laughing by the end of it.

As for the rest of it, I understand how these words can affect people but consider the source. Either the person is saying it out of ignorance, hatred, or frustration of the moment. It's so pervasive that most kids don't even know they said anything offensive, and get pissed when I correct them.
