Most Overrated Movies

Unread postby CAVSTRIBEBROWNSin07! » Fri Jan 08, 2010 12:49 pm

Inspired by waborat's list of best movie twists, here's my list for most overrated movied of all time (or at least that I can think of on a hungover Friday morning).

TOP 3
1. The Usual Suspects
2. Boondock Saints
3. The Matrix

In no particular order, here's some more:
Forrest Gump
Lost In Translation
Titanic
All Star Wars and Star Treks
Field of Dreams

And I gotta throw in The Dark Knight, despite loving the movie. But people were calling it THE GREATEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME. Overrated.

Yet another reason why Suspects is so overrated. Any time I bring that up theres's someone who calls me a dick.

As I said in waborat's thread, a 1 minute gut punch ending does not make up for 2 hours of boring, monotonous, implausible, incomprehensible crap.

I can already visualize the veins popping in Swerb's neck.

Mine's getting there as well (although I do agree with Donnie Darko being overrated).

There are two movies that always make my "overrated" list:

Pulp Fiction: Don't get me wrong; this is a good movie. Just not as great as it's made out to be. It goes slooooow at times, especially the scenes between Butch and his insufferable Spanish girlfriend. It ranks a mere third on my all-time Tarantino list, with Kill Bill at #2 and the criminally underrated Jackie Brown at #1.

Lost in Translation
: Numbingly boring, except for Scarlett in her undies.

Is there a difference between an "overrated" movie and a movie "I didn't really care for but it is probably more about me because a lot of reasonable people really like it"? Because I don't think the fact that you didn't care for The Usual Suspects means that you should necessarily label it "overrated."

I didn't really like Citizen Kane, but I'd have to be some kind of narcissist to call it overrated... basically implying that I'm right about it and everyone else is wrong.

With that said, Eraserhead is hands down the most worthless piece of shit in the history of cinema ever to be considered remotely good. There is a small contingent of people who think that it is a masterpiece. That would be OK if they didn't consider any dissenters "not smart enough to understand surrealism and David Lynch's true genius."

Screw those assholes. Eraserhead is nothing more than Lynch's completely boring mess of a student film that deserves nothing close to the cult status that it has somehow attained.

Keep saying it, Superbad

"Hey, I mean if we swear enough every two minutes it'll make the movie hilarious!!"

No it wasn't, I'm all for swearing in movies and I fully support it (I thought 40 year old virgin did this brilliantly), but when it's done in the way Superbad did it, it came off as forced and unfunny.

Not to mention, Michael Cera is like David Spade, but in a dweeby way with his sarcastic/smartass type roles, and Jonah Hill pretty much is an unfunny clone of Seth Rogen. Two of my least favorite actors right now in Hollywood are those two, and it's largely due to this movie.

And Cera just got another role in another movie called "Youth in revolt", the sad thing is, I don't even think that Zach Galifianakis, Fred Willard and Ray Liotta can save the movie from probably one of the most overrated comediac actors of our day.

Good points.

For "universally lauded movies that I personally didn't like", the top one would be "The Passion of the Christ". Lots of people loved it, including my wife. I considered it slasher porn. "Do the Right Thing" is another one in that category. And quite frankly, I just personally don't get all the hoopla for "The French Connection", but I know I'm in a minority there, and it's just me.

I especially agree with those types of movies where I think the artsy critics are totally full of it...like Eraserhead. First of alll, unlike Swerb, I'm just not a David Lynch fan. Blue Velvet was OK, but I just don't get the love he always gets from critics ("Mulholland Drive bored the shit out of me).

For me...the Eraserhead level movie would be "Being John Malkovich". Horrible film, but all the critics raved. Same with "Little Miss Sunshine", which was only good for Alan Arkin's character.

And don't even get me started on how much I hated "Mars Attacks" and "Starship Troopers"...although I'll admit that many people loved them, and it's more of a personal taste thing than a "this movie is Pluto Nash level shitty".

Yep, that's another one for me. I don't know if I'd go so far as to call it horrible, but it really didn't do much for me at all.

When I think of overrated movies in general, I think of movies that people say you "don't get" if you don't like them. "Oh, you just didn't get it." Well, why the fuck should it be hard to "get it?" It's a movie, not the damned Rosetta Stone.

EDIT- Another big overrated for me is The Insider. Russell Crowe was AWESOME in that movie, and I usually love Michael Mann, but it just bored me to tears. It was two hours-plus of people talking on the phone.

I think you fell out of the demographic for this movie. I know it's age-appropriate for you, but as far as I can tell, you found nothing to relate to. It's funny how you focus on the swearing. I've noticed that as someone who constantly writes shit as sh*t (or something to that effect), you have something against foul language. Which is fine, that's your prerogative. But still, the movie definitely was not intended to focus on the foul dialogue.

You just weren't that kind of person in HS so you didn't find it funny. As for me, and a lot of my friends, it was somewhat representative of high school. There was a giant stigma attached to going to college a virgin or someone who hadn't partied and enjoyed alcohol. And I went to a private high school.

You have to take this movie for what it is. Trying to get laid in high school. If you want to call it overrated because of some cursing, so be it. But at no point did you mention anything about the content or the theme.

I don't like Michael Cera either, but EVERYBODY knew that kid in HS. Everybody. He was cast perfectly for the role. The socially awkward, easily pressured guy who thought he could fit in by going along for the ride.

I'm not going to say I find Jonah Hill hilarious. I also think his character in Superbad was well-written. The fat, untalented, tool who had the sense of humor that made him tolerable, but really had no chance at hooking up with a girl and being popular. Again, most everybody knew that kid in high school.

As for Youth in Revolt, it's based off a book. Haven't read it, don't intend to, and won't see the movie, but of course Cera's going to get roles. You don't do Juno and then disappear.

Really, the point of this post is to say that blaming swearing for Superbad being a movie you didn't like is just a crutch. You couldn't relate to it, your friends could, and you nitpicked to find a reason to dislike it. If you didn't like the characters, that's a different story.

Not sure I can really think of too many overrated movies because I don't generally see the popular movies unless I think I'll like them. For example, I wouldn't go see Avatar. I'm missing out apparently, but it really isn't my kind of movie.

I do that out of respect of other forum users, given the choice, I'd probably swear like an eminem record, but I recieved a complaint about it, and decided to respect their wishes.

1) The Matrix- Has anyone ever once said "Wow that Keanu Reeves sure can act"?

2) The Dark Knight- Yeah I said it. Christian Bale is an awful stiff of an actor. Go ahead, try to prove me wrong. Other than American Psycho, he's a boring douche. In every movie.

3) Juno- Diablo Cody should go back to riding poles for a living. (now Mitch is pissed)

4) Gladiator- It's a good movie, just not as good as it's made out to be.

5) The Hangover- It's funny, just not as funny as I thought it would be.

I wasnt that guy in high school but certainly wasnt far from it. Plus, I was good friends with "that guy" in high school so I know what you are getting at ST. However, I just didnt think it was that funny. Its not a bad movie but I think the hype exceeds the overall funny in the movie. Plus, I think it has a little do with the fact Michael Cera continuous plays the same role and its kinda getting old. He was still at his best as George Michael in Arrested Development because the material was stronger and he had better actors/actresses to play against.

I say the same about Juno. Definitely not a bad movie but one I dont think will stand up against the test of time. Juno came off as too much of a smart ass, typical of this generation. I will say that Allison Janney and JK Simmons stole that movie. They by far were the best part.

Other movies I found overrated:

1.)Borat -Gonna get a ton of heat for this one but I just could not stomach this flick and usually these kind of original films are my favorites. It did nothing for me to rank it so high in the minds of society.

2.)The Hangover- Its funny but not the greatest comedy of all time like some have said

3.)Slumdog Millionaire -This is an age old tale repackaged and set in India. Really didnt think this was anything special.

The amount of swearing in Superbad, I thought, was pretty accurate. When I was a teenager (back before they had these newfangled techno Interwebs) I dropped F-bombs just about every other word. My mother detested foul language and that became one my teenage rebellion things -- I swore as much and as I could.

I've cut back now, but I know that age swears a lot because they feel it's empowering.

Pulp Fiction: Nailed the Bruce Willis - fat, ugly, stupid girlfriend scene. It becomes a scene of convenience to get Bruce back to his apartment. And I hated the dialogue and the actress in that scene. Rest of the movie is brilliant.

Jackie Brown is criminally underrated.

TUS: Great Movie, endlessly watchable because of the performances and how it's cut together.

Forrest Gump: My Number One Overrated Movie of the last 20 years.

Also Overrated: The English Patient. I don't think I've ever met anybody who's actually seen that film. Bored the ever-loving crap out of me.

Note on Star Wars/Star Trek: Other than Empire Strikes Back and Wrath of Khan, I don't think any of those films ever really made anyone's "Best of" list, other than the hardcore fans.

I don't think it's all that hyped. If it is hyped, it's hyped by people mine and Trip-S's age. I thought it looked dumb as hell when I saw the trailer. I didn't see it in theaters. I finally sat down to watch it while doing a free trial of BB Online and really enjoyed it.

In fact, in terms of the comedies of the last 4 or 5 years, I don't think anybody really talks about it. More of the conversation has focused on movies like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Knocked Up. But, that's also because those movies have something for women in them too. Superbad is strictly a guy movie IMO.

Cera is the same one-dimensional actor that we've had regurgitated for the last 6 or 7 years. Look at Kristen Stewart. She did Speak, a movie about a girl who got raped and then doesn't talk to anybody. Then Twilight, and Adventureland, and New Moon. She plays the same downtrodden, melancholy character in everything that she does (have not seen either Twilight, but my fiance tells me that she plays the same character as Adventureland and Speak). There are far too many of those people out there now, with the same mundane delivery.

I say the same about Juno. Definitely not a bad movie but one I dont think will stand up against the test of time. Juno came off as too much of a smart ass, typical of this generation. I will say that Allison Janney and JK Simmons stole that movie. They by far were the best part.

I'm not a huge Juno fan, just because I'm not a huge Ellen Page fan and the whole movie was about her. Cera didn't really have enough of a part to be a factor in my mind. The overall message of the movie is fantastic, though, and that was what it was supposed to achieve.

The storyline is way off. Had to write a paper on it for an Ancient Civ class to finish off my gen ed classes comparing the movie to what was written about the real event (which may also be bullshit).

The battles are awesome and the effects are pretty bad ass, too.

+1 to Transformers. Not that they get a lot of love anymore, but the Pirates of the Caribbean series is horrible.

It's not supposed to be a historical movie, it's based on Frank Miller's graphic novel.

Th fight with the Immortals (who were real) was epic.

Forrest Gump was on last night over here.
Just confirmed how not over-rated it is

Just saw Inglorious Basterds last night and thought it was horrible. Painfully slow plot development, pretty lackluster acting performances except for Christoph Waltz as Hans Landa. Everybody else was pretty unremarkable. I guess a lot of it boils down to I didn't know much about the movie and figured it would be more about the basterds than it was. But overall, I thought it was a giant waste of 2.5 hours of my time and I have absolutely no idea why it's got an 8.5/10 on IMDB.

Really, really awful movie.

I will probably catch static for this, but I have never been able to make it through Braveheart. I just find it tremendously boring and cannot understand why it is so revered by so many people.

The Big Lebowski.

So popular, and yet I've tried three times and can't enjoy it at all.

By "people" you must mean the Phist and Dick Cheney. It was propaganda with a wooden actor in a rubber suit puntuated by Ledger's stellar performance.

Springing to the film's defense does one thing: makes it more overrated. And I didn't watch the YouTube video!

Is that a line from Lebowski? It's not particularly funny, so I'm guessing yes.

I thought you were here to offer the future Brazilian biopic on Anderson Varejao as the "Most Overrated Movie". :hide:

Superbad is definitely overrated. Parts of it were funny but only because of Seth Rogen. I absolutely hate Michael Cera considering he plays the same character in every movie. "A dorky high school kid who tries to get a girlfriend."

But David Spade is hilarious. Mainly because of Chris Farley, but some of his movies after Farley are still funny. Mainly Joe Dirt and Dickie Roberts.

No, it was: Pabst. Hilarious joke, though. It was funny when they named that character that in The Naked Gun... 20+ years ago.
