Looting or Survival?

CNN has a link with the question as it pertains to the situation in Haiti. I can't get to it here at work because it's a streaming video but I just wondered if the posters here have any thoughts.

Is it justified given the circumstances or is it simply a crime of opportunity?

Medicines, supplies, electronics, etc. Is the line drawn at what's being taken or is there even a line when you're in a survival situation?

When I saw the footage of New Orleans after Katrina, I thought that it was most definitely looting. Guys carrying around TVs through waist-high water. And in any situation where the law is pre-occupied with a much larger situation (hurricane, earthquake, riots), you're going to get people trying to get over on The Man. That's a foregone conclusion.

I guess it's all dependent on what is being "looted". That's a very basic way of looking at it, but I'm not going to fault a guy in a 3rd world country for trying to take some food or some water. That doesn't make it right, but I can see it. I'd do the same if I was in that situation, and I'd imagine most readers on this board would as well. That doesn't make it legal, but in a life and death situation, I'm not really concerned with what the law says.

When your actions are depriving the impoverished and needy then I don't see how it can be justified even if you are in a desperate situation yourself.

If to survive in the present circumstances is to pilfer and expropriate in such violent ways then every person who poor or downtrodden would indulge in the practice, which incites nothing but chaos and compounds the suffering of others.

You gotta nip it in the bud or it can spiral out of control and lead to increased lawlessness. We saw that in Iraq.

Reports are getting worse, of course, 200,000 possibly dead. 1.5 million homeless. People attacking each other with machetes and bottles for beer and rum. Hopefully the massive amount of food/ water will be delivered in the next few days to help quell the unrest. It's Lord of the Flies there right now, and will continue to be until supplies are abundant.

I have a friend who was a first responder on an SRT that went in immediately after Katrina. He said the very first thing they saw was operating gas stations/convenience stores charging $20/gallon for gas AND water. Nothing like gouging your fellow man in a time of desperation and need..........

I also agree with the posters who said, if you are stealing food to eat, I understand. But why are you looting PS3s and XBoxes????

I think you have to view certain items as necessary for survival, so I wouldn't call it looting per say. At this point though I would certainly hope people taking any type of food, water, clothing or shelter that belongs to somebody else would be willing to share it as much as possible with others trying to survive through this until ample help arrives.

In a time of disaster, should you choose to be philanthropic, that's your call. In a perfect world, we should "help those less fortunate", "there but for the grace of God", etc, etc, etc...

However, two things to consider when chaos supplants order:

1. Be prepared
2. Protect what you've prepared

Reports of anarchy and looting in Haiti are looking to be as reliable as the same reports that were refuted in New Orleans. People are essentially good. There are always those looking to take advantage of a disaster like this (from the few people stealing tvs that they won't be able to make a profit with to people like Obama looking to be a good guy by pledging $100,000,000 even though that hasn't even begun to make its way through Congress), but the overwhelming majority of the people there are just trying to help each other.

I'm very thankful for the world the Red Cross is doing, and sickened by all the "hangers on"-type charities trying to use this disaster as a fund-raiser. Fuck you, "Save the Children", who wants to proselytize their bizarre fundamental Christian beliefs as a condition of giving aid, and whose commercials are all over the television now.

Sorry if this ruffles some feathers, but I just had to post this. I'm hoping someone can explain to me how firing on fleeing unarmed people not suspected of any possible crime is justified, as well as to how these assholes have been able to lawyer-up as long as they have.
