Favorite Twist Endings in Movies

Unread postby waborat » Fri Jan 08, 2010 9:51 am

IMO, nothing better than watching a good 2 hour flick and getting taken for a loop in the final few minutes...

My faves:

1. The Usual Suspects: I was wondering WTF I was watching the first time until the finale...Immediately after, my wife looked at me and said, "play it again!"

2. Arlington Road: Picked this one up on a whim when it came out and was pleasantly surprised...Have recommended it to all my friends/family/strangers and all reviews have come back :thumb up:

3. Primal Fear: Read the book first so I knew what was coming, but it's still one of the most classic conclusions...Plus it was Norton's first!!!

4. Se7en: Maybe the most disturbing endings??? Spacey was on a roll that year

5. Planet Of The Apes: Classic Shit!

6. No Way Out: Murder mystery with political intrigue...So many try and most fail, but not this Costner classic

7. Unbreakable: Still my favorite MNS story, because I never saw "it" coming

8. The Game: Still not sure what the hell was fake & reality?

9. Jagged Edge: a guilty pleasure

10. Frailty: Rivals "Se7en" for most disturbing

As soon as I saw the thread title, I knew I'd need to come out with this.

I've been blasted for this many times, but I've always hated The Usual Suspects. Hated it the first time I watched it when I didnt know what was happening, and the subsequent times when I did. IMO it is hands down the most overrated movie of all time.

1 minute of "holy shit, Spacey is Keyzer Soze!" does not make up for 2 hours of boring monotonous crap.

As for the other movies on your last, Arlington Road blew my mind. Great movie and twist. Read Primal Fear before I saw it so that sucked for me. Not a big fan of The Game - just too implausible. Se7en was nuts.

The only ones I can think of that haven't been mentioned are:

No Country For Old Men - We've been trained our who lives that the good guys win and everything will turn out OK.

Fool's Gold - I don't know if you saw things working out for McConaughy and Hudson, but I sure as hell was surprised by it.

BTW - I'd have Sixth Sense in there because I didn't see it coming. I know a lot of people did, though. I wonder what percent figured it out...and what percent of those are lying?

Had trouble watching this. Every time Jeff Bridges talks, I kept hearing "No Walter, you're not wrong, you're just an asshole" and "I'm not Mr. Lebowski. You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me."

Count me in for Sixth Sense. I didn't see it coming at all. One of my favorites.

I thought Signs was a twist ending in that the signs were not the signs from crop circles, etc, but other signs that were seen and not understood until the end. The ultimate "sign."

Of course, in its time, "Psycho" was quite the twist ending. Along with Vertigo of Hitchcock flicks.

I liked Unbreakable as well, but not as much as the others.

That is a damn twist ending if I've ever seen one! :thud:

Although the movie sucked, and I hate Nicole Kidman like the clap, The Others ending was pretty mind blowing.

Good movie. Even good enough for me to overlook Crowe playing a Steelers fan.

How about DiCaprio getting popped in The Departed? Or Wahlberg coming back for Damon, for that matter.

Good call on The Departed. Although once Leo was out of the picture, I was fulling expecting MarkyMark to take care of the rat disposal.

Another twist...Inglourious Basterds. Certainly did not see things ending up the way they did in the theater.

Good call, both on Landa's turn and Aldo Rain's final swastika. Christoph Waltz has to be a layup for best supporting actor this year, right?
