Is Andrew WK a hoax?

Unread postby jfiling » Thu Dec 31, 2009 5:17 pm

No offense if anyone responds "who cares?", but I found this interesting.

Supposedly, "Andrew WK" was a media creation, and the man pulling the strings for the first album was Dave Grohl.

That link shows the current "AWK" admitting it's a role.

More speculation, which is the best word for it, but I could see Grohl writing the first AWK album.

Neat. There is nothing wrong with corporately created art/music, per se, the problem is that it generally ends up being a bucket of lukewarm spit in its effort to be profitable, and therefore appeal to as wide a group of people as possible. Same reason good local restaurants are always superior to chains, or a good independent coffee place puts Starbucks et al to shame.

That doesn't mean that these things can't be good for what they are, ie: consistent, reliable, dependable if almost never great. Nor does it mean that a corporate artistic creation can't achieve real greatness, just that it is difficult.

All that said, umm... it's not like it is being revealed that, say, Radiohead (just to use an example of a current act that I consider sublime/timeless) was put together in a boardroom. It's Andrew WK. I am not shocked at all.

Weird. His dad is a law professor at The School Up North....seems to be a pretty elaborate hoax for a well-respected law professor to be a part of. The relationship of Andrew WK and Prof. James Krier was confirmed to me by one of my law professors in 2004, who used to teach with Prof. Krier. So, who knows?

There is only one Andrew WK. This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Maybe he was created by suits, I dunno and maybe he replaced some other guy, I dunno but Andrew WK is the only Andrew WK the public has ever known. It's been the same guy since his debut album. To claim otherwise is kind of idiotic.

Here is his first video in 2001 which was a big hit

and here is an ad for a kids game show he's been hosting from 2009

You're telling me that's a different guy?? lol.
