Sad day for boxing, hard to think of anyone that represented the sport, or any sport for that matter, with more class. Hated him when he beat Mancini, but came to appreciate him for being a solid guy. Wish more athletes would follow his example.

Good call. If you combined talent and being a decent person he moved WAY up the boxing greats list.

His classic, nearly fatal fight with Aaron Pryor is the first fight I can ever remember watching. I was young. Will never forget where I was though ... at my grandfathers, watching it with all the men in the family. Have since rewatched it a couple times on Classic.

Swerb-good story, those sporting event related memories from our childhood help connect us to our youth in a way that few things can. I vividly remember the Mancini/Orlando Romero fight back in 1983. It was on network TV on a Saturday afternoon in the fall and I had a Pee Wee football game that night. We started to watch the fight at home, but had to leave for the game so we took a black and white 13" TV and plugged it into the cigarette lighter in the car and watched the rest of the fight on the way to the game.
Incidentally, this is also the first time I can recall watching TV in the car...amazing how things have changed over the last quarter century.

I feel the same way Swerb. I watched that fight with my Dad when I was a young kid and it left a lasting impression on me. Probably watched it 4-5 times since then.
He was a great champion and a true gentleman.
