2009 MLB Pick 30 - Phase II - Lead Man Wins Again

Unread postby swerb » Tue May 26, 2009 12:15 pm

Alright everyone, Phase II starts in 13 days. On Monday June 8th. The last day of the pool is Thursday, July 30th. While Phases I and III are 50 days long, Phase II is 53 days long due to the three days off for the All-Star break in mid-July. In those 53 days, you have to make 30 picks. Each of the 30 MLB teams one time. 23 pass days (three forced due to All-Star break). Most overall wins takes the phase. $30 per man, winner take all.

This is a very fun pool. A lot of fun, excitement, and smack talk for 30 bucks. Each phase is a new phase, so missing Phase I means nothing.

Here are the winners from last year, and Phase I this year:

2008 Phase I - Lead Pipe 21-9
2008 Phase II - Lead Pipe 23-7
2008 Phase III - Swerb 24-6

2009 Phase I - Bill Henry 22-8

OFFICIAL RULES

Phase II will last 53 days. Starts on Monday, June 8. Last day of selections will be Thursday, July 30th.

Pick one baseball team each night to simply win their game. You cannot pick the same team twice. And have to select all 30 teams in baseball one time.

Contest lasts for 53 days. So seeing as how you need to pick every team in baseball one time and one time only, there will be 23 days you don't pick a game. Use those PASS days wisely when there is no strong selection amonst the teams you have left to use. All picks must be time stamped, in this thread, no later than the official start time of the game per MLB.com or else the pick is thrown out. While you don't have to post your picks until the start time of the game you are selecting (example: can post a pick for a 10:05 PM EST game at 10:01) ... you cannot change a posted pick once the days first game is underway. If your team is rained out, you get a PASS for that day and have to select that team for another game in the future.

The winner is the person with the most total wins after the Thursday, July 30th games end. Winning % means nothing. Most total wins. If two people are tied at the end, and one is 22-8, and another is 22-7 (say due to a day #50 rainout) ... that is still a tie. Only category that means anything is total wins.

If everyone makes all their picks, each entrant will have picked exactly 30 games, each team in baseball one time, over a 53 day period. $30 per player, winner take all.

The tiebreaker, once we get there, and if we need it ... will be to pick the winners of every baseball game on the last day of the contest, Thursday, July 30th. And note - July 30 is both the final day of the contest, AND the tiebreaker day. Any competitors who could potentially be involved in a tie will have to pick the winners of all 11 games that day. And also identify their final Pick 30 selection, if they still have one pick left to make. The second tiebreaker, if needed, is total runs scored by all the teams you selected to win in the final day tiebreaker. Third tiebreaker would be run differential.

PHASE II ENTRANTS

These 13 people paid an extra $30 for the full year/most wins contest, which pays $390 to the winner. So we know they are all in. If you want in Phase II, make it be known in this thread.

Ding, ding. Round two. Phase I was action packed, with a host of people still alive going into the final week. Peeks and Pipe made mad rushes to seize the lead, then faded late ... as Bill Henry plodded along solidly to a very strong 22-8 record, which was good enough to best the field.

Barring any late entrants, we're looking at 19 players for Phase II and $570 for our winner. 13 of those 19 people are also in for the year to date prize (most total wins) of $390.

Light slate to get things started. Twinbill between the Tigers and Chisox, so be sure to clarify which game you want if taking one of those teams.

53 days for Phase II, but three of those are the All-Star break. So like all other phases, 50 days of action to make 30 picks.

May the force be with you.

Current Standings - Day 1/53

1 Swerb 0 - 0
2 Action Boy 0 - 0
3 Earl17 0 - 0

Blistering start for the field as the 11 players who made a pick on opening day of Phase II went 10-1. Five people won with the red hot A's. Five people won with fellow bottom feeder San Diego, who rallied to win at home behind the arm of Jake Peavy. Only Eckersly lost, as he backed the Rangers at home against Toronto, only to be undone by two Adam Lind home runs.

Full slate today. All night games.

Braves for Tuesday.
If the Dolans owned BP, they'd give promotions to everyone responsible for the oil spill.

One note, Gashouse is IN the pool and is our 21st player. $630 total to the winner. He told me a couple days ago, and I forgot to post it. He certainly has no advantage coming in after a 19-4 start for the field in the first two days.

Another great day for the field on day two, as players went 9-3 after Day 1's 10-1 effort. We've consistently seen blistering starts for the field in the first two weeks of these Phase's, and the wins very hard to come by in the final week of the pool. No surprise really, as it is the nature of this pool.

Full slate tonight. All night games.
