I hope he does.

I liked him very much for the short time he was here and him being able to help out us would be awesome.

i'm not exactly sure what you mean by "working", but what can he do, honestly??? he can't work a trade. it's past the trade deadline. he can't be trying to work out a buy-out deal for smith so that the cavs could then sign him. that would be considered tampering. if you ask me, ferry is only doing what the rest of us are doing, hoping and praying that okc agrees to let smith out of his contract. we got one day, folks. otherwise, it looks like "chris mihms" (channeling kenny roda's bad impression of former cavs coach john lucas) might be coming back. ugh!!!

Really it's on Fegan (Smith's agent) to get the buyout after that then the Cavs can basically pay him what they have.

I think it's 50/50 it gets done.
Playing here is the closest thing to heaven. Really, I mean it's amazing to be in a place where the fans truly cherish their football team and stick behind them win or lose. Quick note because I looked at the CBA stuff again. Joe Smith can be immediately signed by the Cavs. They had to wait 20 days from the date the traded him to OKC since the trade occurred outside of the season. That has long since passed so if Smith is bought out tonight the Cavs could get him on the roster immediately.

They also may now have the ability to take Snow off the roster if the NBA has approved all the injury claims.

March 1 is the drop dead date or playoff rosters, so any buyout has to happen before the day ends tomorrow. You are ineligible for playoff rosters if you are cut after March 1.

Windy is now reporting that there may be a "surprise" name bought out before tomorrow night. No names mentioned, but he did say it was a higher profile name than Joe Smiff.

My wild-ass guess: 'Sheed.

Alright dumb question time:

If Smith gets released he has to go on waivers. What causes him to go through waivers? Why wouldnt somone pick him up, what is the issue here. I would think we are pretty far down on the waiver priority.

I know we've worked our angles with Fegan for Joe Smith, as I had explained a few days ago. Joe didn't want to just come here as in insurance policy, but, now that he would have a vital role, and Fegan is comfortable knowing that it wouldn't eat into AV's minutes ...

I think that if Joe does come here, Fegan would like some assurances that AV would continue to have his same is not greater role to finish out the season as well ...he wouldn't want two fo his clients impeding each other's futures.

So, if he catches wind of Sheed rumors, he may step in and say whoa ...we're willing to work with you guys, but not at the expense of Andy's court time ...

That's just how things work in conversation between an agent and GM during tmes like this ...

He pretty much is Donyell Marshall circa 2006. At least in terms of what each brings to the table offensively.

Donyell shot 42.4% from the field, and 35.1% from 3 that year (his 2nd year here) in a little under 17 MPG. He averaged 7.0 points and 4.0 rebounds. If you double his minutes to about 33.8 or so, then he gets about 14 PPG and 8 RPG.

Rasheed's line this year? In 33.3 minutes, he's averaging 12.5 points, 7.6 rebounds, shooting 42.3% from the floor, and 36.2% from 3.

The difference between 'Yell and Sheed on defense is staggering. Or at least it was, haven't watched a lot of Wallace this year. He's also a guy that needs to be on a contender to be motivated, IMO. But Rasheed at least used to be a monster of the defensive end.

What an insult, to call him Donyell.

Joe Smith and the Cavaliers are reportedly near an agreement, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
If Smith ends up signing before today's deadline for acquired players to be playoff-eligible, then he could eat into Anderson Varejao's value. The report also indicates that the Cavs are looking into a "surprise" forward, who could end up being Drew Gooden, as he has been rumored to go to the Cavs as well.

I compared him to Donyell offensively. And that's pretty much what he is now. Defensively I have no idea since I haven't watched him play defense recently.

IF he came here, maybe he would play more inside than he does now. I don't know. But right now, this year, in Detroit, he plays a lot like Donyell Marshall did that year.

From what I just gathered from a phone call I just had with a person who should be pretty up to date on where things stand right now ....it looks like all system's are pretty much go for Joe Smith to be ready to join the Cavs around Wednesday of this coming week.

Pretty much all hurdles have been crossed and financial aspacts agreed upon. Not sure when the announcement should be coming down the chute, but, what I was told is that it looked like all the figures jived, and we're set to acquire Joe Smith.

I asked if any other news besides that could be forthcoming, hinting about any other players, and he didn't have anything to add to just Joe Smith. I guess we have had other coversations going on, but, as of 15 minutes ago, everything was centered on Joe Smith being the guy that joins the Cavs..

So, that's what I've got ...nothing on Rasheed mentioned, but, I didn't even bring up his name, left that for him to offer, and he did not offer anything but the name Joe Smith, and it looks great ...all system's go for him to join us.

Oh WAIT, he did offer up that Fegan and Ferry's relationship is 200% better than it was last year at this time ...good news for people that want to see AV remain a Cav ...

THAT WHAT I GOT ... Looks like Joe's our guy, folks.

I'm still not getting excited until it becomes official, but that is a damn nice pick up. Think Joe Smith is ready to hang them up? I'd like him to stick around for a year or two, perhaps that will take place now that he is coming back. It would be an old frontcourt, but some call that experience ;-) ;)

Nice. Joe Smith was my #1 target. He's experienced, he can score the midrange jumper, and he's spent time with just about everybody on our roster before. No downside to this, IMO.

If Joe actually comes back to the Cavs, I'll be pleased as punch. He balled hardcore for the team after the deadline deal last year, and arguably had the largest impact of the those acquired in the deal, before this season when Delonte entered treatment for his psychological issues and was shifted into his natural 2-guard role, becoming the team's heart, soul and glue. Joe's still got the goods to score on O and the know-how to play some D, so hopefully he'll once again prove to Cleveland fans that he's the "Uncommon Player with the Common Name."

Make it happen!

Huge pickup if it goes thru.

Having a 4th big man that can make jumpers allows us to be much more flexible with our rotation. When Ben comes back will have to make some choices but I love having to make those rather than being stuck forcing JJ out there.

I still think JJ is going to have use against a Leon Powe type player in the playoffs so I would hesitate anyone writing him off completely.
Playing here is the closest thing to heaven. Really, I mean it's amazing to be in a place where the fans truly cherish their football team and stick behind them win or lose. 6 minutes after I post, thats funny. Well I am glad it is done. Someone with knowledge of the NBA waiver process care to tell me why no one would claim Joe Smith? It cant be money he is only owed 1.3 or something, or is it money? Why wouldnt a team like Orlando claim him just so we cant have him. Explanation please.

Anyone think Boston might be a little pissed they signed Mikki Moore and Starbury instead of waiting it out to see if Smith was released if that was infact his first choice.

I can only guess that it must have something to do with this:

OK, So I would assume it is because most if not all teams are over the cap, yet not over the luxury tax threshold. Makes sense.

Ziner, after re-reading it, plus your remarks, my best and final guess is that no teams have an exemption large enough to fit Smith's entire year's salary under the cap, so he's guaranteed to make it through waivers. I'm hoping one of our cap geniuses can clarify further, but I think I'm on the right track.
