i'm not exactly sure what you mean by "working", but what can he do, honestly??? he can't work a trade. it's past the trade deadline. he can't be trying to work out a buy-out deal for smith so that the cavs could then sign him. that would be considered tampering. if you ask me, ferry is only doing what the rest of us are doing, hoping and praying that okc agrees to let smith out of his contract. we got one day, folks. otherwise, it looks like "chris mihms" (channeling kenny roda's bad impression of former cavs coach john lucas) might be coming back. ugh!!!

Joe Smith can be immediately signed by the Cavs. They had to wait 20 days from the date the traded him to OKC since the trade occurred outside of the season. That has long since passed so if Smith is bought out tonight the Cavs could get him on the roster immediately.

They also may now have the ability to take Snow off the roster if the NBA has approved all the injury claims.

March 1 is the drop dead date or playoff rosters, so any buyout has to happen before the day ends tomorrow. You are ineligible for playoff rosters if you are cut after March 1.

The difference between 'Yell and Sheed on defense is staggering. Or at least it was, haven't watched a lot of Wallace this year. He's also a guy that needs to be on a contender to be motivated, IMO. But Rasheed at least used to be a monster of the defensive end.

Nice. Joe Smith was my #1 target. He's experienced, he can score the midrange jumper, and he's spent time with just about everybody on our roster before. No downside to this, IMO.

If Joe actually comes back to the Cavs, I'll be pleased as punch. He balled hardcore for the team after the deadline deal last year, and arguably had the largest impact of the those acquired in the deal, before this season when Delonte entered treatment for his psychological issues and was shifted into his natural 2-guard role, becoming the team's heart, soul and glue. Joe's still got the goods to score on O and the know-how to play some D, so hopefully he'll once again prove to Cleveland fans that he's the "Uncommon Player with the Common Name."

Having a 4th big man that can make jumpers allows us to be much more flexible with our rotation. When Ben comes back will have to make some choices but I love having to make those rather than being stuck forcing JJ out there.

OK, So I would assume it is because most if not all teams are over the cap, yet not over the luxury tax threshold. Makes sense.

Ziner, after re-reading it, plus your remarks, my best and final guess is that no teams have an exemption large enough to fit Smith's entire year's salary under the cap, so he's guaranteed to make it through waivers. I'm hoping one of our cap geniuses can clarify further, but I think I'm on the right track.
