Mosley vs Margarito and Affliction Jan 24th

Unread postby Guest » Fri Jan 23, 2009 6:10 pm

I am expecting an entertaining fight.
This is Margarito's first fight since destroying Cotto in what was the fight of the year in 2008.
He is now the hunted, I am interested to see how he handles it against a true pro like Sugar Shane.
10pm on HBO tomorrow.

Can't wait. Shane has held up great into his late 30's but Margarito's just going to be too much. Mosely's only chance is to win 4-5 of the first six rounds (Margarito has penchant for starting slow) and then holding and fighting very conservatively in the last six rounds. Margarito has been chasing a belt his whole life, and I am not expecting a let down in his first defense, against a guy that can't really knock anyone out anymore.

Mosley is 45-5 with 38 wins by KO. He has won by KO in 3 of his last 4 wins.
I had to triple check this because nobody thinks of him as a power puncher.
Now I don't think he'll KO Margarito but it's pretty impressive given the large number of big fights that he has had.

Nobody thinks of him as a power puncher because he isn't. At least not anymore.

Ricardo Mayorga and Fernando Vargas. Thats who those knockouts are against.

All those KO's came earlier in his career. Take away those three wins against those two soup cans, and he hasn't knocked anyone out since 2001. 14 fights ago.

He has never been a huge puncher. It's the number of punches that he lands that got him KOs.
His hand speed has been what has gotten him the high KO percentage.
Knocking Vargas(one of your favorites if I recall correctly) out twice is nothing to sneeze at.
Remember what Mosley did to his head?

That was a long time ago against a bad fighter.

Listen, I got a lot of respect for Sugar Shane. Thought he was done when he lost 4 times in a couple years to Forrest and Winky. He's kind of remade his career, stayed in incredible shape. From what I've heard, no one works harder outside the ring, and its a testament to him that he is in a fight this big after losing 4 of 5 fights. The Cotto fight ... Cotto was always in control and was never hurt, but he fought him tough. So it's clearly possible that he can fight Margarito to a close decision tonight.

But he just can't hurt good fighters anymore at age 37.

He wants to win, he's gonna have to get out to a good start and then hold on (literally) for dear life.

I like Shane and have enjoyed watching him.
HGH has helped him along I have a feeling however.
I just hope we see an entertaining fight tonight.

Thats right ... I forgot he was linked to HGH.

I got Margarito winning a 116-112, 116-112, 115-113 type unanimous decision.

Impressive start for Mosley, who was determined to make an impression there. Margarito ... not much action. Slow starter.

10-9 Mosley

Tough round to score. I'm giving it to Shane, who looks like the better fighter through 2 rounds.

3-0 Sugar Shane, who is dictating the tempo and landing the crisper shots.

However, I think Margarito finally woke up that round, after getting hit with a couple hard Sugar Shane straight right hands in the middle of the round.

30-27 Mosley

Hes done what he needed to. Looks like Margarito is waking up though.

Wow. Another round for Shane. 4-0.

40-36 Mosley

Margarito better wake the fuck up soon, or he's gonna be done, just like the Paul Williams loss. Tough to knock Shane out.

5-0 Shane. Like deja vu of Pavlik/Hopkins.

Margarito will need to knock out Shane to win this fight. Mosley's never been knocked out.

Ass whoopin.

6 rounds Shane, 0 rounds Margarito.

Margarito looks disinterested and outclassed. His corner looks in over their heads.

60-54 Mosley

1st round for Margarito, but it was a tight call.

Wow. This one is over.

10-8 round for Shane

79-73

Margaritos corner is clueless.

Margarito gets to the top of the hill and then gets destroyed.
I'm not surprised and I saw it coming.
Shane has some power.

All these years of Margarito talking about being disrespected and dodged. Finally gets to the top of the division.

And just doesn't even show up.

Took a fight he thought he could win just by coming to the arena, and then got his ass beat.

You can book this ... Mayweather will come out of retirement to fight Shane. And beat him handily for a lot of money.

How about the illegal hand wrapping?
How long has that been going on?
Cheating bitch got destroyed and I'm glad.

Cause I didn't want to start a new thread...Fedor just KTFU'ed Arlovski in the 1st round. I haven't seen much of Fedor, and I wasn't particularly impressed. Not saying he wasn't good, but for the 1st 3 minutes, Arlovski was looking better in the standup. Arlovski then goes for a flying knee and gets caught with a quick right in mid air. I don't know if I've ever seen someone get knocked out mid air. Arlovski then face-planted in the ring. Ouch.

Thank goodness for SopCast. Watched Affliction on and off tonight, and it actually looked like a pretty good set of fights.

I watched the Affliction event as well.
It was good but not much more.
Their production and announcers are garbage.
Arlovski looked great and got stupid so he paid the price. The punch to me didn't look that bad but Arlovski is known to have a glass jaw and Fedor hits like a sledge hammer.

I was sooooo glad to see Margarito get his ass beat tonight. It's not secret that I'm biased, and am a big Cotto fan.......but I'd love to know how long this illegal hand wrapping business has been going on.

Major props to Shane for an outstanding fight. His corners gameplan and the way he was able to execute it was off the charts Saturday night. I'd like to see Floyd come out of "retirement" to fight Shane and then Pacman further down the road.

Now we know why Margarito was a slow starter, he needed the wrap to harden. It makes perfect sense.

It also would explain this:

Gotta really give Mosley credit for bringing on BHop's trainer, who was savvy enough to see this from Margarito pre-fight.

Mosley was fighting like a man who was about to lose half his money to his ex wife. Oh wait ... he is. Dude just made prolly most of it back though. He's gonna get a monster pay day in his next fight, which I still think will be Mayweather.

Also, this potential revelation about Margarito's illegal hand wraps, if legit, makes Cotto a top 3-4 lb for lb guy once again in my view. Right behind Manny and Juan Manuel.

Mixed feelings about this fight...on some level both appear to be cheaters. Mosley with HGH/BALCO which I do not believe was a one fight deal for one second and now Margarito with this taping fiasco. Cheaters don't just cheap once, or even always stop once they're caught so both of these guys are tainted in my mind both going forward and backward...which is a shame because I like watching them as they're both entertaining and have fan friendly styles.

Of the three, I'm still taking Cotto first too.

I agree Busted.
I want Cotto to get his rematch and beat the living shit out of Margarito.
Floyd or the Punisher will take care of Shane soon enough.
