The $10,000 buy-in main event got started about 20 mins late this year, but the cards are out.

I guess we can just post updates of notables or locals in this thread.

Some of the big names on Day 1a include H.O.R.S.E winner Scotty Nguyen, "Action" Dan Harrington, David "Devilfish" Ulliott, Heads-Up champion Paul Wasicka, Freddy Deeb, Barry Greenstein and David Benyamine. Benyamine drew the seat next to his fiancé Erica Schoenberg.

Pocket jacks crack pocket aces, on the river no less, for the tournament's first elimination less than 20 minutes after it started.

At the dinner break, the chip leader has 103,000. One woman cracks the top five in 5th with 90,000.

Knocked out thus far: Gavin Smith, Dan Harrington, Jason Alexander (pocket aces cracked by the wheel), Raymond Rahme, Freddy Deeb, Devilfish Ulliot, and David Benyamine.

Ray Romano doing well with 32k. Chau Giang at 52k.

I love some of the bad beat stories that come out of this tournament.
I was reading pokernews.com recap of day 1a about the guy whos quad aces were busted by some chap with a royal flush made on the river...or the other guy who got a royal flush was shorstacked and was only able to double up to 200 ,,or pocket kings flops a set against pocket aces that completes his set on the river...wow!
entertaining stuff..but then I didnt put up 10 k to get in either,

If i was winner in any of these hands I would've aged 15 years, while the loser lands in a M*A*S*H* unit

Less than 6k expected to play per latest reports. Nice all in buttons/fans. All-In Energy drink bought the rights.

Wish the WSOP was on Sirius again. In '06 they had massive coverage/play by play with guest analysts, etc. It was outstanding.

Orel Hershisher was just eliminated hitting top pair K on the turn with the Qh as his backup for a four flush. He was called by someone who flopped a flush with suited connectors. He doubled up to 5,350 at one point flopping a J with A J to top his opponent's A Q.

Patrik Antonius and Erick Lindgren having great tournaments so far, near the 100k mark at the dinner break.

And here's breaking news: Jamie Gold is out already.

That guy is such a fucking hack.

Also out is Daniel Negreanu.

So the numbers are in.

6,844 entrants. Top 666 paid. Top prize, $9,119,517.

Avg stack after all the day ones is just over $37,000. Carlos Mortensen and Gus Hansen at 109k and 105k respectively. That's after Mortensen doubled a guy up late in day one 1d.

Others still in for Day 2a, Johnny Chan (67k), Phil Hellmuth (75,8k), Phil Gordon (51k), Jennifer Harman and Allen Cunningham (45k), Jerry Yang (26,6k), Doyle Brunson (10,5k)

Anyone have a stake in the first-day survivors?

Adam Restifo from Cleveland is our home game rep; he moved to day two w/ 26K.

Todd Mariani won the Mahoning Valley Poker club 2008 title and got through Day 1 w/ 25K.

The 2007 MVP winner, Greg Huffman, finished 139th and took down over $60K in prizes. We all shared.

MVP is open to anyone who may be interested.

If you want to explore the MVP website further, let me know and I will provide you with a login and password. It has league constitution, rules, structures, point accumulations, etc.
Again, anyone is welcome to join the Ytown club as well.

After Day 2a, the current chip leader has 801,000. That's over 400,000 more than second in chips.

Just found out, the current chip leader is a recreational poker player from Cleveland, OH. Brian Schaedlich is a special education teacher in the area and "plays online poker rarely".

Good luck to the local boy!

I just read that too. I usually read the Tao of Poker blog to follow the WSOP. he got mention there. I'm pulling for him.

Special Ed teacher would be a good story.

Hellmuth out in 45th.

The Mouth goes from 1.5m to 3.3m since they started this afternoon. Brandon Cantu is also one of the biggest stacks remaining.

I think its safe to say Matusow is one of the top 3-4 NL Hold Em players in the world right now. For my money, The Mouth, Hellmuth, Allen Cunningham, Humberto Brenes ... these are the guys I've consistently seen going deep into large or elite field NL Hold Em events most often.

Man, the Tao's blog makes it sound like the ESPN coverage of the main event should be great ... with The Mouth, Phil, and a hot chick going deep into the event.

Dr. Pauly w/Tao of Poker is about the best blogger going.

The difference between Hellmuth and Matusow is that if Hellmuth would have taken it down, the lion's share of money goes into his pocket. Who knows Matusow has to pay off after this thing is over.

9 bustouts in the first 5 hours of play this afternoon. Already down to 18 with 9 more to go before the 3 month hiatus (which I hate more every minute).

Brandon Cantu is out. Tiffany Michelle is still in but she's lost half her stack and is down to $5m. Maybe it's the curse of 'The G'.
"Get on your bike little girl and ride on back home."

Blinds are 50k/100k and 10k ante so she's still in very good shape despite it costing $240k per orbit. Big stack has $14m. The ESPN guys have to be praying a decent looking broad makes that final table. There will be nothing about this woman you won't know come November. May even get some knucklehead to give her another album deal.

The ESPN dreams are dead.

Tiffany Michelle finished 17th when her AJ was snapped off by AA on a flop of A 10 9.

$335k to the good side of the ledger though. About 1/3 of which is hers.

For what it's worth, the Final Table is going now. Ivan Demidov's increased his stack by 11M so far today to take a fairly commanding chip lead.

Hand by hand 'live reporting' Tripods.

http://www.pokernews.com/live-reporting ... nal-table/

Craig Marquis the first to bust (walks away with $900k)

Kelly Kim was next ($1.3m)

7 left.

The players can't be happy about that site reporting the hole cards. I remember that being one of the sticking points from Phil Gordon when they showed the '06 WSOP.

Chino Rheem will be deadly if he can double through one or two more times.

They don't report 'em unless they're shown down or a payer exposes them on a bluff or whatever. Look at the first 45 minutes when there wasn't a flop, there shouldn't be cards discussed unless a player shows the table.

I was going to say the thing about Rheem when I posted the link. He gets chips and he is dangerous. No one there wants to see tha guy double up but he's quickly going to be in a position where he has to push with marginal cards.

Rheem open shoved for 3.5m w/AK and was called by AQ,

You can guess the rest but a Q on the flop sent Rheem to the rail in 7th. Good for $1.7million

Amazing how that always seems to happen in the biggest spots. Even though AK is, what, a 74/26 favorite over AQ? Even more if they're the same suit.

It's wide open now, but I think Demidov will do what Kravchenko couldn't in 2007.

Just saw a ridiculous hand on High Stakes Poker.

Jamie Gold has K K. Patrik Antonius has A J. Flop comes Q 10 3. Gold bets 35k, Antonius calls. Turn comes K. Antonius bets 45k, Gold goes all in for over 300k. Antonius insta-calls. $743,800 pot. Gold asks him if he wants to run it three times. Antonius mulls it over, says twice, then decides again and runs it three times.

First river card: Q
Second river card: 3
Third river card: 8

Unbelievable. That was sick.

22-year-old Peter Eastgate, of Denmark, becomes the youngest main event champion in history. He turned the wheel to crack Ivan Demidov's two pair on the final hand.

The final table runs tonight on ESPN.
