Kimbo had better improve his ground game for this one.

Shamrock will submit him within 90 seconds.

Kimbo by KO
Probably within 30 seconds
Shamrock won't be able to get him down and he is going to get destroyed.

I'm surprised by the confidence in Shamrock here. I think Kimbo takes it easily, too much power and Shamrock won't be able to get him to the ground.

Spoon, I forgot to update you on my buddy's first mma fight (amateur). He got the 'W' about 2 minutes into the first on a rear naked choke. There were 8 amateur fights and 2 pro fights, and the difference in aggression and skill was like night and day. The pro guys were/are absolutely ruthless. It was impressive.

Congrats to your buddy, that's great to hear.

I have zero confidence in Shamrock. He got beat up by a stiff his last fight.

People hear his name and think of the 1993 guy.
If Shamrock does somehow win, Kimbo will be back fighting dudes in the parking lot somewhere for $50 a fight.

Might be worth tuning in briefly to CBS for this one?????

I'll be watching, no doubt about it.
Since this post started I have interviewed Ken Shamrock and he convinced me he will win.
Maybe it was the fact that I watched him at UFC 1
I have a feeling this is going to be a decent fight.

Gina Carano being on the card will make me tune in as well.
I love her and had the chance to interview her on "The Fight Fans"
She was great.

Unreal
Shamrock had a cut open up earlier today and the fight is off.
Kimbo will now fight Seth Petruzelli, a UFC vet.
Might be a pretty good fight.

WTF. Is he Arturo Gatti? How the hell do you let that happen?

What a fucking joke.

Hope Kimbo enjoyed his manufactured 6 months in the spotlight. He sucks.

Maybe the funniest shit I have ever seen.
Gus Johnson saying it was the biggest upset in mma history
Jared Shaw, EliteXC President, whining as Kimbo was getting ko'ed
I love it
A disaster and pretty damn funny.

This whole Elite XC production is a joke, outside of Gus Johnson.

Was not surprised to hear tonight they are on the verge of signing Tito Ortiz, another washed up bum.

Classy move by Kimbo. Ignores Gus Johnsons questions about the loss, asks for love from the crowd (after getting knocked out by a nobody in 10 seconds) and then promotes the afterparty.

I will never watch this dog shit again.

Another example of why boxing is the far superior sport.

Oh yeah, now Seth is a star? Gus Johnson is the biggest joke of them all, a clown.

Because of the EliteXC boxing is better? Now that's funny. What happened with Arthur Abraham today?

Boxing is great
The EliteXC is a joke
The UFC is king.

Boxing, 70-80% of the top fights live up the expectations. UFC/MMA ... 40-50%, if that. Prolly lower.

Boxing, 60-70% of the top fights are free. UFC/MMA, 90% cost you $50.

UFC is a very good product. But it still can't compare with The Sweet Science.

Honestly, it's tough to compare that.
Boxing you get one good fight on a card, 2 if you're lucky. The undercards are normally crap. We can go months without a decent fight.
The UFC has 7 to 8 total fights per show, half are usually good. They have at least one card a month.
Both are great sports but to compare anything to what we just saw would be a mistake. That was horrible.

Agreed that the disgrace we just saw should not be an indictment on the UFC. If anything, it should speak to what a quality organization it is.

We agree, finally.
When there is one huge fight in boxing, there isn't anything better. No doubt about it. We just need to see more of it.
We have a great run of fights coming up, both in mma and boxing.

Kelly/BHop, Lacy/Taylor, Hatton/Malignaggi, DeLaHoya/Pacquiao ... all in the span of 5 weeks.

Can't wait.

How about my boy "Bad" Chad Dawson vs Tarver next weekend?
Calzaghe vs RJJ?
Not bad either.
Mix in UFC 89 on the 18th and UFC 90 on the 25th.
Oh yeah.

Apologies to all you legit fans of this "sport" but tonight this sport made the WWF look legit.

Biggest joke I've ever witnessed on television outside of a "CHiPs" accident.

...and they didn't even have the guts to try to pull this off on pay per view.

Embarrassing.

I'm not a too much of a boxing/MMA guy these days (my favorite boxer was Mike Tyson when he was formerly known as a guy named 'Iron Mike') but I am interested in the big name bouts and whatnot. I looked everywhere this morning for the results of the Shamrock/Slice fight and found nothing. I could not find it anywhere until I broke down and turned to Wikipedia and found this:
On October 4, 2008 Shamrock was warming up and received a head butt and needed 6 stitches and was not able to compete against Slice. The doctor who examined Ken said he would not be able to compete for at least 45 days because of the injury

First the exploding ear, now this? Funny thing is I was waiting for the debate to come on the other night and stumbled upon an Undertaker Wrestlemania highlight video during a WWF broadcast and I agree, it's more legit than this crap. What a joke.

FUDU, I have a question for you and I'm not trying to a prick in anyway.
Do you normally watch mma or did you just tune in for this fight because it was on CBS or you wanted to see Kimbo?
The event was embarrassing, no doubt about it.

I just know the sport as a whole is great, see any UFC or WEC event.

Cuz, I know, you know that the UFC is a much better product.

Problem is, the vast majority of people don't.

There are so many people out there right now, like FUDU and BDFD, that have been hearing about MMA and were intrigued. Not even close to intrigued enough yet to shell out $50 for a PPV. But intrigued enough to check out a free show on CBS featuring two big name guys.

They tune in last night, and that's what they think MMA is now. No bringing those people back.

From all accounts, Dana White has been a borderline genius in building the UFC to it's present level.

But he has dropped the ball big time not getting UFC on mainstream TV. He's losing more and more people by the day. He lost a lot last night.

His product is good. But its on a little dog shit cable station no one knows about and not everyone gets. His good cards cost you $50, and 60% of them are busts.

Stop robbing the public blind for your product and strike a deal with a TV station people actually know about. I'm a perfect example of the type of fan he is losing. I like MMA. I know the UFC is the best of the best. No way in hell I'm paying $50 for PPVs though.

UFC will never draw in mainstream America until they make these changes, it's that simple.

UFC does draw in the mainstream, the sport would be all but gone of it wasn't for the Ultimate Fighter reality show.
Check the ratings of the UFC Fight Nights.
I do think the sport could blow up even more if it was the UFC on CBS instead of the crap we saw last night.
The UFC isn't going anywhere, even if they stay on Spike and have $50 pay per views every month.
They sell out every single arena, 15k people plus.
Wait until Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar fight on PPV and you see those buys.
The UFC is in great hands and is a phenominal product.
60% are busts? How would you know if you don't watch them? That's just a number you threw out there. I totally disagree there.

That all being said, I wouldn't blame people for not watching again if all they saw was last night's show. That's just the way it goes.

I don't watch them, but read your recaps and others online, which would indicate, at the least, a 50% disappointment rate.

UFC is far, far away from what most would consider "mainstream sports" in America.

Link below is to last week's Nielsen ratings of the most watched sports events.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/weekend-tv-ratings.htm

Note -this data is only from the 56 major media markets, and not from all of America, which the PPV buy numbers are. All in numbers.

Last week's Cowboys/Redskins game was watched in over 12 million Nielsen households. Probably 20 million all in. Baseball playoffs, 2 million households, 3-4 million all in. Golf tournament from last week, 1.4 million Nielsen households, prolly 2.5 million all in.

Delahoya/Mayweather, 2.15 million pay per view buys. Tysons top PPV fights all came in at around 2 million buys.

Quick google reveals that UFC PPV buys generally come in at 400,000 - 550,000 buys.

Growing? Viable? Chance to become mainstream? Yes.

Mainstream now? Not even close.

That's fine you can ask.

No I do not regularly watch fighting sports period anymore, boxing ruined my interest years ago.

So sure it is unfair of me to judge this sport (not just this division) by the one fight I saw last night.

But for me it comes down to what looks and seems reasonable to the senses, and that fight was not reasonable in any way shape or from for me.

IOW I am saying it if wasn't fixed in some way or many ways than I have no clue as to an explanation of that other than divine intervention of some kind.

Rich makes a very good post about my feelings and outside casual viewers like myself.

I won't be tuning in next time even if it is on free TV, actually this time I only saw it b/c I didn't have control of the remote. LOL.

This is from a Yahoo article, their mailbag:

UFC IS NOT WINNING

I’m sick of hearing about how the “UFC is winning” and how in boxing you never see the best fight the best like in the UFC. How is the UFC winning when De La Hoya-Pacquiao just brought in a $17 million gate? The UFC couldn’t dream of that. They have less pay-per-view buys (which seems to me to equal fan interest), but yet UFC is winning? If somebody thinks boxing doesn’t have exciting fights and the best don’t fight the best, maybe they should have tuned into Juan Diaz-Michael Katsidis, Cotto-Margarito or Nate Campbell-Diaz or Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez, etc. Boxing needed to answer the challenge of the UFC about two years ago – and it clearly has. I’ve seen more quality fights in the last two years than in the last 10. UFC is not winning. Thanks for your article on Cristobal Arreola. I’m excited to see him step up.

Randy Knie
Milwaukee, Wis.

Randy, I love both sports, though I’ve been a boxing fan for as long as I can remember. First, to correct a mistake, the UFC is outselling boxing when it comes to pay-per-views. That was the case in both 2006 and 2007 (they also outsold the WWE in those years) and I imagine will be the case in 2008, as well. Some of the boxing power brokers have realized the urgency created by the competition from MMA and they’ve done somewhat better, but they need to do more. If promoters didn’t try to protect fighters and television executives only bought the best fights, regardless of who the fighters were affiliated with, the sport would be way better off. The simple fact is this now: If you’re a television-caliber boxer and you’re promoted by Golden Boy and managed by Al Haymon, you can get away with fighting lesser opposition. That simply hurts the fan.

I watched this stuff periodically last night, usually during commercials of the OSU-Wisconsin game. I have to say that Gus Johnson could make going to the bathroom entertaining. He is the best play by play guy in any sport. Anyways, Kimbo Slice can go back to his beating up people on the internet and steer clear of the real MMA stuff.
"It's all about winning for me, and I think the Cavs are committed to doing that," he said. "But at the same time I've given myself options to this point, and like I said before, me and my team, we have a game plan that we're going to execute, and we'll see what we get."

This may sound badl. But, i used to watch UFC when it first came on. Me and a buddy got the PPV of the first few events. I think the sport have become to mellpw. I mean, the first few events, the would go in the rings and knock the crap out of eachother. They would have to be knocked out before the fight would be called. Now, a fight is called after a few punches. I just think the sport was more appealing when it was more of a underground sport. Now it is too mainstream.

Yes, the early days were great!
No poking of the eyes, and no shots to the groin were about the only rules that existed.

2nd that, Gus Johnson IS March Madness and it's a damn shame that CBS always sticks him on those crappy opening round games (that can only be watched because Gus Johnson is calling them) only to toss him away for the later rounds. He can call any sport or pseudo-sport he wants and make it exciting.
Fuck the Browns...

I couldn't disagree more on Gus Johnson. I think he's average at best on hoops/football.
Terrible when it comes to mma.

"The most exciting fight in mma history" he said regarding the Kimbo fight.
If I had a dollar for everytime he said "Anyone, anytime, anyplace" I could take a few years off of work.

I know he was trying to hype up the fight but come on.

Isn't Gus Johnson the guy who compared Slice to Tiger Woods?

Seeing your top 2 makes me puke.
Now I see why you have Gus #3.
Wow.

It was Gus who compared Kimbo to Tiger
Enough said.

You spelled Dickie V wrong, it's DOOKIE V.
And he sucks.
