Spoon, I forgot to update you on my buddy's first mma fight (amateur). He got the 'W' about 2 minutes into the first on a rear naked choke. There were 8 amateur fights and 2 pro fights, and the difference in aggression and skill was like night and day. The pro guys were/are absolutely ruthless. It was impressive.

Boxing, 60-70% of the top fights are free. UFC/MMA, 90% cost you $50.

UFC is a very good product. But it still can't compare with The Sweet Science.

Honestly, it's tough to compare that.
Boxing you get one good fight on a card, 2 if you're lucky. The undercards are normally crap. We can go months without a decent fight.
The UFC has 7 to 8 total fights per show, half are usually good. They have at least one card a month.
Both are great sports but to compare anything to what we just saw would be a mistake. That was horrible.

I'm not a too much of a boxing/MMA guy these days (my favorite boxer was Mike Tyson when he was formerly known as a guy named 'Iron Mike') but I am interested in the big name bouts and whatnot. I looked everywhere this morning for the results of the Shamrock/Slice fight and found nothing. I could not find it anywhere until I broke down and turned to Wikipedia and found this:

On October 4, 2008 Shamrock was warming up and received a head butt and needed 6 stitches and was not able to compete against Slice. The doctor who examined Ken said he would not be able to compete for at least 45 days because of the injury

Problem is, the vast majority of people don't.

There are so many people out there right now, like FUDU and BDFD, that have been hearing about MMA and were intrigued. Not even close to intrigued enough yet to shell out $50 for a PPV. But intrigued enough to check out a free show on CBS featuring two big name guys.

They tune in last night, and that's what they think MMA is now. No bringing those people back.

From all accounts, Dana White has been a borderline genius in building the UFC to it's present level.

But he has dropped the ball big time not getting UFC on mainstream TV. He's losing more and more people by the day. He lost a lot last night.

His product is good. But its on a little dog shit cable station no one knows about and not everyone gets. His good cards cost you $50, and 60% of them are busts.

Stop robbing the public blind for your product and strike a deal with a TV station people actually know about. I'm a perfect example of the type of fan he is losing. I like MMA. I know the UFC is the best of the best. No way in hell I'm paying $50 for PPVs though.

UFC will never draw in mainstream America until they make these changes, it's that simple.

UFC does draw in the mainstream, the sport would be all but gone of it wasn't for the Ultimate Fighter reality show.
Check the ratings of the UFC Fight Nights.
I do think the sport could blow up even more if it was the UFC on CBS instead of the crap we saw last night.
The UFC isn't going anywhere, even if they stay on Spike and have $50 pay per views every month.
They sell out every single arena, 15k people plus.
Wait until Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar fight on PPV and you see those buys.
The UFC is in great hands and is a phenominal product.

Note -this data is only from the 56 major media markets, and not from all of America, which the PPV buy numbers are. All in numbers.

Last week's Cowboys/Redskins game was watched in over 12 million Nielsen households. Probably 20 million all in. Baseball playoffs, 2 million households, 3-4 million all in. Golf tournament from last week, 1.4 million Nielsen households, prolly 2.5 million all in.

Delahoya/Mayweather, 2.15 million pay per view buys. Tysons top PPV fights all came in at around 2 million buys.

Quick google reveals that UFC PPV buys generally come in at 400,000 - 550,000 buys.

Growing? Viable? Chance to become mainstream? Yes.

Mainstream now? Not even close.

No I do not regularly watch fighting sports period anymore, boxing ruined my interest years ago.

So sure it is unfair of me to judge this sport (not just this division) by the one fight I saw last night.

But for me it comes down to what looks and seems reasonable to the senses, and that fight was not reasonable in any way shape or from for me.

IOW I am saying it if wasn't fixed in some way or many ways than I have no clue as to an explanation of that other than divine intervention of some kind.

Rich makes a very good post about my feelings and outside casual viewers like myself.

I’m sick of hearing about how the “UFC is winning” and how in boxing you never see the best fight the best like in the UFC. How is the UFC winning when De La Hoya-Pacquiao just brought in a $17 million gate? The UFC couldn’t dream of that. They have less pay-per-view buys (which seems to me to equal fan interest), but yet UFC is winning? Randy, I love both sports, though I’ve been a boxing fan for as long as I can remember. First, to correct a mistake, the UFC is outselling boxing when it comes to pay-per-views. That was the case in both 2006 and 2007 (they also outsold the WWE in those years) and I imagine will be the case in 2008, as well. Some of the boxing power brokers have realized the urgency created by the competition from MMA and they’ve done somewhat better, but they need to do more. If promoters didn’t try to protect fighters and television executives only bought the best fights, regardless of who the fighters were affiliated with, the sport would be way better off. The simple fact is this now: If you’re a television-caliber boxer and you’re promoted by Golden Boy and managed by Al Haymon, you can get away with fighting lesser opposition. That simply hurts the fan.

This may sound badl. But, i used to watch UFC when it first came on. Me and a buddy got the PPV of the first few events. I think the sport have become to mellpw. I mean, the first few events, the would go in the rings and knock the crap out of eachother. They would have to be knocked out before the fight would be called. Now, a fight is called after a few punches. I just think the sport was more appealing when it was more of a underground sport. Now it is too mainstream.
