Inexpensive virus software?

Unread postby consigliere » Tue Aug 26, 2008 9:53 am

Anyone have a recommendation for a good, reliable inexpensive virus protection for the computer? I had Norton, but it was ridiculously expensive ($49) and I tried some of the free stuff but am not happy with those options as well. Thanks.

Not going to porn websites is the best form of virus protection.

Webroot Spysweeper picks off Trojan viruses when it scans. I'm not really sure on what other viruses it protects against, but those are the most frequently acquired, but that program always has mail-in rebates when advertised at Circuit Shitty, Best Buy, Office Max, etc. Come to think of it, I just looked on their site. You can get three years of Webroot Antivirus, antispyware, and firewall for $69.95 (one year for $39.95). I've always been happy with Spysweeper, so I can't imagine their Antivirus being any different.

NOD32

Cheap, great, doesn't take up a lot of space on your hard drive. Best I've used.

I honestly have never once used AV software but I always purchased/recommended Trend Micro AV to my clients. It's light, does not take over the PC, and is generally inexpensive (remember, you get what you pay for).

If you are looking for a quick scan instead of active protection, boot into Safe Mode w/ Networking and run the free online scan from either BitDefeder or Ewido (or both, actually).

Spyware Doctor. I think I paid like $30 for a year.

Tony Norton's is good software and I have yet to pay more than $19.99 for it. Just keep your eye on Office Max, they have or at least used to have great rebate specials there. 2003 or 2004 I got a Norton's disk for $1 after rebate.

Kaspersky is generally considered to be one of the best. It is not the resource hog that Norton is and you can buy multiple licenses. It may not fall into the cheap category, but it is the best one out there that catches pretty much everything.

I couldn't beg to differ more on Norton. There are too many bells and whistles and it generally keeps your computer from running correctly, at least in a business environment. No way should an AV agent be taking up 80-100MB of your memory. Trend uses about 4-5MB and simply protects against malware. No, I don't work for Trend Micro.

I got a 30-day trial of this which I downloaded and will see how I like it.

Thanks to all for the help and suggestions.

FTW - I've been using AVG Free Edition for at least 5 years and no virus has ever got through.

For spyware, I also agree with Spyware Doctor - I got mine free also through Roadrunner.

Thanks for agreeing. When it comes to spyware, I've found that a combination of Spybot and AdAware works to clean out the system.
