Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones and her son Mervyn Jones II, of Cleveland, at the Karamu House Hall of Fame Induction, June 28.U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, the first African-American woman to represent Ohio in Congress, has died after suffering a brain aneurysm, said sources familiar with the situation.
She was removed from life support at 12:19 p.m. at Huron Road Hospital, the sources said.

Tubbs Jones, 58, served as a Cuyahoga County judge and prosecutor before succeeding U.S. Rep. Louis Stokes. She has served five terms in Congress and was expected to easily win her sixth in November.

The mood of supporters around noon was somber. Cleveland Councilman Roosevelt Coats was seen sobbing outside the hospital. He said that Tubbs Jones was unconscious and that her friends and relatives were preparing for the worst.

Just got taken off the ventilator an hour or so ago so they probably had that in there from the article announcing she was in the hospital.

That's outstanding. Newsstand price goes up 50% and the quality of reporting drops. And with the level it was at before who would have though that was possible?

To be completely fair, I did see it announced on CNN as well. Of course, they cited the PD as their source.

Good ole' PD .... comedy of errors over there.

This still isn't as embarrassing as having Bud Shaw on the payroll though.

I couldn't agree more.

P.S.: with no disrespect to Ms. Tubbs-Jones intended -- I wonder if the PD will go for broke in its misinformation, and report that she is headed to New York in exchange for Zach Randolph.

How does the ABJ do it? Half the resources of the PD, rumored to be going out of business every six months, yet they drop the hammer on the PD most of the time when it comes to coverage. Or at the very least, you don't get the sheer volume of dumb mistakes you see in the PD.

I guess when you're collectively desperate to survive, you work harder.

She has limited brain activity according to what I heard on another local radio station. So, she might as well be dead anyway. That's not to say I hope she is, just that after such a serious brain injury, she won't be able to function at full capacity and the prognosis already was not good.

The Dead Collector: Bring out yer dead.
[a man puts a body on the cart]
Large Man with Dead Body: Here's one.
The Dead Collector: That'll be ninepence.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn't: I'm not dead.
The Dead Collector: What?
Large Man with Dead Body: Nothing. There's your ninepence.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn't: I'm not dead.
The Dead Collector: 'Ere, he says he's not dead.
Large Man with Dead Body: Yes he is.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn't: I'm not.
The Dead Collector: He isn't.
Large Man with Dead Body: Well, he will be soon, he's very ill.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn't: I'm getting better.
Large Man with Dead Body: No you're not, you'll be stone dead in a moment.
The Dead Collector: Well, I can't take him like that. It's against regulations.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn't: I don't want to go on the cart.
Large Man with Dead Body: Oh, don't be such a baby.
The Dead Collector: I can't take him.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn't: I feel fine.
Large Man with Dead Body: Oh, do me a favor.
The Dead Collector: I can't.
Large Man with Dead Body: Well, can you hang around for a couple of minutes? He won't be long.
The Dead Collector: I promised I'd be at the Robinsons'. They've lost nine today.
Large Man with Dead Body: Well, when's your next round?
The Dead Collector: Thursday.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn't: I think I'll go for a walk.
Large Man with Dead Body: You're not fooling anyone, you know. Isn't there anything you could do?
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn't: I feel happy. I feel happy.
[the Dead Collector glances up and down the street furtively, then silences the Body with his a whack of his club]
Large Man with Dead Body: Ah, thank you very much.
The Dead Collector: Not at all. See you on Thursday.
Large Man with Dead Body: Right.

Well, in that case she can still post in the Indians gamethreads. Which is nice.

Well played, sir.

Not to mention, with limited brain function, she still can continue doing what the rest of the Cleveland politicians do on a day-to-day basis.

Love the Python references.

I hope she recovers, despite the fact that I would be embarrassed to have her represent me if I lived in her district. Obviously she is well-respected in her community, and my politics will not come in the way of me hoping the best for her. She has been a trailblazer, being the first black woman to represent Ohio in Congress, and she has done some good there.

Now that she's dead, I can still only say that she will be missed. Not by me, but I know that the majority of her constituents will miss her representation. We live in a representative democracy, which means the people who voted for her thought greatly of her.

Some of you here are totally disgusting. To make jokes of someone's health and untimely death is ludicrous.
Even if you didn't support Stephanie Tubbs Jones as a member of congress, you could at least show some respect.

I hope I'm not a member of that club. That said, just because she was able to hoodwink a majority of voters to elect her doesn't make her any more special than any of the other thousands of people who died today. I do respect her ability to become a servant of her constituents, but as a human being, her death is no more special than anyone else who died today.

Condolences to her family and friends. It's always sad when anyone dies, especially so suddenly. One day you might have a normal day and the next one be gone.

There's often so little that can be done with some of these aneurysms. It's tragic when it happens whether you be a congresswoman or a janitor.

This is where it goes Apex.

People process and handle things differently. Some less 'clinically' than others. And FWIW, the disrespect was intended for the PD and the Indians gamethread.

Bad shit happens to people every day. You wouldn't ever crawl out from under the covers on a daily basis if you didn't deal with it one way or another. Irreverance is one method.

That Indians crack earlier in the thread was hilarious and nearly caused me to cough up some water and possibly spray it out of my nose. I don't understand why it's not correct to crack a joke there. It's hardly at Tubbs Jones' expense and was not meant by anyone to denigrate her.

People can get offended way too easily. And you know, sometimes humor is the best way to deal with tragic situations.
