I'm more concerned with the sentence term than the actual crime.

Can anybody who really knows our justice system explain why they sentence people for that long? Is there some kind of (stupid) rule to it? I'm guessing yes, and I'd just like to know.

I think it is a roundabout way of letting the dude know that there is no parole.

I would think a "life sentence" wouldn't include parole either.

Yep its pretty much just insurance against the chance of him ever getting paroled.

Because if he gets convicted on that many counts, that's the total punishment. It's more for logistical reasons than anything else to show that he was found guilty of numerous crimes.
