South Africa's answer to Martin Luther King Jnr
Rescued a country from Apartheid government
His wife was a psychopath but Mandela was a true hero to many Black South Africans and sacrificed 27 years of his life in prison for the Anti Apartheid movement
I wouldn't attribute the end of Apartheid just to Mandela. There were quite a few people and nations involved in that. Mandela served as a symbol of it, but the longterm pressure from the western nations coupled with many other heros (such as Stephen Biko) also brought this to light.
He did have one major difference with Martin Luther King - King never resorted to violence. Mandela went out of his way to ensure that people weren't hurt, something that others in the cause did not do when he was imprisoned.
