Trying To Wean The Kid Off The Bink

Unread postby swerb » Thu Jul 12, 2007 10:26 am

I’m trying to wean my kid off of his pacifier. This is not going to be an easy task. He’s like an addicted cigarette smoker. He wants the binkie after meals, when he wakes up, before sleep. I really got worried when he rolled it up in his sleeve last night.

Any advice from any parents out there?

This is an actual conversation I had with him this morning …

Me: Nicholas, put the binkie back in the crib.
Nicholas: My binkie.
Me: No, daddy bought you that binkie. Now I want it back.
Nicholas: Daddy, my need it.
Me: Nicholas, you don’t need that binkie. They’re for babies.
Nicholas: No daddy. My need it.
Me: Nicholas, binkies are for little babies. You are a big boy now. You’re never going to get any girls chewing on that binkie.
Nicholas: My like girls daddy.
Me: GOOOOOOOOD boy. Good boy. Now let me see that binkie.
Nicholas: Daddy, no. My keep it.
Me: You don’t see your buddy Patrick (sitter’s 9 year old son) with a binkie, do you?
Nicholas: Chocolate cake?
Me: What?!?
Nicholas: My want chocolate cake daddy.
Me: Nicholas, you can’t have chocolate cake for breakfast. And you ate way too much cake yesterday.
Nicholas: Daaaaaaaaady, I want chocolate cake.
Me: Nicholas, mommy will freak out if I give you cake.
Nicholas: Mommy in shower daddy.
Me: Will you give me the binkie if I give you chocolate cake?
Nicholas: Here you go daddy (hands me bink).

Needless to say, I’m still a little rough around the edges as a parent.

It's never easy on either side of this. You'll want to cave in when he wont go to sleep with it at night forsure. I just took my kids away and after a couple of days they were fine.

Just dip the business end in wasabi sauce or unrefined horseradish. The kid may live in fear for a few months but it will nip the bink cravings in the bud.

We got lucky, our daughter never took to the pacifier, so I can not help you out. You are on your own.

It seems lately, as I watch the news, I see about every other guy is taking a really proactive stance on this situation by murdering their pregnant wife or girlfriend.

We are in the process of weaning our 10 month old...she can't talk back except mama, dada and cat so I think the reasoning is on our side. With her we let her have it in the car and at bedtime. Then took it away in the car and right now we are down to naps and bedtime. She does take it out as soon as we enter the room.

My friends with their 2 year old had a bye bye binkie party. They had cake, ice cream, pizza. Found all the binkies and put them in a box. Then the parents told the little guy that they were going to send the binkies to kids who needed them.

Although for months after they would be out in public and the little guy would see a baby with a pacifer and tell the parents of the babies that the pacifer was really his.

Good luck!
