Heights

Does everyone become afraid of heights when they get older? I never used to be. I was up and down ladders painting every summer for years, taking risks and doing so really stupid shit when I was a kid. But then last year I went to Chicago and the room had one of those windows that goes all the way down to the floor. Standing next to it made my stomach flutter a bit.

Fast forward to last week, I'm on vacation, and the condo is on the 19th floor with a patio. I go out on the patio and get that same feeling but no big deal. Then my 4yo kid walks out there and leans against the bars on the railing to look through and I almost have a nervous breakdown. Without realizing it I'm holding the top of the railing and leaning back to make sure the thing doesn't break. I literally could not handle the kid standing out there for more than a few seconds even though I rationally knew it was fine.

I was a fucking lunatic. What the hell happened to me?

That was the last thought going thru Greg Oden's head the last time he saw his dog alive.

Trust your instincts with your kids.

That's a big part of it. Goes for most/many risks. I did more stupid shit on the lake than Crews & Olin and after Lisa's brother drowned a couple years back I'm damn near apoplectic when my kids go to the beach.

Body chemistry changes as you age too. Lisa just got over two-week session of nasty vertigo after we went to Cedar Point. Doctor told her she was no longer a roller coaster rider because that was likley cause and that it wasn't going to ever get better.

It's either one of those two things/combo of both or you saw Michael Jackson dangle his kid over that railing.

Or you're a tool.

JB and peeker hit it on the head, being a parent/understanding risks as an adult.
