I also love that congress and the president still get paid even if there is a shutdown. But the "mission critical" government employees that have to work regardless don't.

You obviously do not have a wife that decided she need not pay attention to what the tax guy actually said and assumed he would be e-filing the returns. Only to find out 3 weeks later that the stack of documents on your desk actually need signed and mailed to paper file. During the course of those three weeks, you probably did not pay cash for replacement windows, therefore you are not currently sitting around wondering where you are going to get the cash to pay for them when they are installed in a couple weeks.

You're absolutely correct, none of those apply to me. From what I understand though, you can still e-file and they will process those. Only the paper returns aren't processed during the shutdown.

Also, I still think there won't actually be a shutdown, and if there is it will only last a day or two.

Another funny thing about the shutdown...I just got an e-mail that slightly clarifies what is/isn't to happen during the shutdown (if it happens). One, non-essential personel who are furloughed are forbidden by law to do anything for work. If their govt issued blackberrys ring, they are forbidden to answer them. If they had leave scheduled, their leave is cancelled and the furlough takes over.

On the other hand, essential personel who are not furloughed are forbidden from NOT working. So the leave I have scheduled for next Friday to come see the Indians-Orioles? By law (the "Antideficiency Act"), I cannot take the day off and I will be considered AWOL and charged with insubordination. But I don't get paid until the shutdown ends.

So, to sum it up, if you're not essential, you can't work, have to stay home and will eventually get paid. If you're essential, you must work, can't stay home and will eventually get paid.

Government effiency at its finest. Still can't beleive that it has come to this.

Blah, it is a prereq that if you live here you drive a Jeep or Subaru. The only people that drive Subaru's are lesbians and snooty liberal men. Last time I checked I am neither. Therefore, the DMV told me I had to go with the Jeep.
