So today at lunch I decided to text my daughter. I said "Have a nice lunch". Well it was 12:15 but Dad screwed up and it was 4th period English  . Anyway, phone got taken and 3 different people decided to go through all of her messages, even ones from weeks ago. Then called it to see if it would ring. Never a phone call to me or my wife and then put her # on file. Mind you it says "Dad's cell" when she got it. Would it be wrong of me to call her principal and light this guy up? She's in 6th grade and never even had a detention before.

I would have a big problem with them checking her messages on a 1st time offense.
You should have been called before they did anything.

Would setting it on "vibrate" eliminate any of this?

I work for Verizon Wireless and am also a Dad...if they took my kids phone away I would be pissed and would certainly light up the principal. Teachers have no idea if that phone is set up to be tracked to make sure you know where your kid is at all times. it's not like your kid is selling drugs and just got a call to hook someone up with some dope. Yeah I would be pissed but maybe it's because of where I work

Dude, if the story is correct, you need to go apeshit on the principal and the teachers who went through her phone.

Ponn, yeah, you got a legitimate beef.

Especially if your daughter is well behaved and hasn't had any past history with getting all kinds of texts and phone calls during class time.

Keep us informed on what comes of this.....and yeah, your daughter is very quiet.

You sure the teacher didn't have her mixed up with your son being the troublemaker. JK.

I don't have any kids but I think that these "zero tolerance" policies are absurd. It is indicative of people trying to put everything on "cruise control", it just can't be done. Everything is not black and white, there is gray area and gray area management is why us management types get paid the extra bucks. Yes I would light up that principal.

Wow, thats almost lines for a suit isn't it? I know shes a student, but going through her messages is her property. All this because her dad wanted to reach her is pathetic.

I hope they take a look in the mirror.

I don't think that going off would have put a bullseye on your daughter, but it would let them know not to screw up on a situation like that again. Glad it worked out for you.

Schools are going to have to learn to lighten up.

Down here we have one county school board here in Pinellas moving to lighten the rules a bit while Hillsborough County is working to tighten them up. I think Pinellas' approach, requiring cell phones to be put on vibrate, disallowing phone calls and texting during class (except for emergency) is the best way to go. Cell phones can cause problems, but they can also help keep kids safer by having a phone at hand for calls or using GPS on the phone. It's not an assurance, but every little bit helps when there are whackjobs out there like the creep that abducted and murder Jessica Lundsford up in Hernando County.

Penalizing your daughter for a message that you sent her is ludicrous. She's not the school's daughter, she's yours.
