Wedding RSVP Advice

So my fiancée and I already RSVP'd that we would attend my old college roommate's wedding on New Year's Eve. But now, we've determined that it's going to be too difficult on us financially, especially having to have contingency plans in effect for bad weather since it's in Detroit.

Both families are well off and I'd feel like a pathetic douche citing finances as the reason. What would be the best way to go about telling them that we can't make it?

The way to do it is ASAP. I was fucking pissed when we paid for 7 people that RSVP'd and didnt show up. I bet they haven't given their count yet. As to how to cancel, make something up or just tell the truth. Either way I would just be thankful I didnt pay for someone who didnt show... cause that sucks ass.

I'd tell them it's effing New Years Eve and I can get a buzz on with friends closer to home and for a lot less cake than what it's cost me in Detroit. With a better chance of surviving regardless of any other city I may be spending it in.

They might be swayed by you mentioning the joy you get out of watching Dick Clark's tongue get stuck on every consonant for two straight hours before the ball drops.

But like Z said, tell them soon and send something you can afford in your place.

I've been married over 5 years now, and still haven't forgiven the random retards who cost us money by saying they were coming and then bailing without a "by your leave."

This ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ 1000%. I was limited by money and capacity on the number I could invite. 5 people didnt show up and I was furious. I know for a fact I could have included 5 from the did not invite list to fill that if I knew ahead of time.

Just be open and honest with em. Send something when you can. If they can respect your situation then they arent being much of a friend to you.

No exciting outcome. Told him the truth and he said we weren't the only ones who declined because of the timing and the cost. I forgot to mention Dick Clark. Sorry Peek. I still got a laugh out of it, though.
