I think the best waiter, as selected by the owner/manager, gets the table regardless of section assignments. To think of it, that party was probably the waiter's only table while they were seated and my have been in a private room. No way a professional waiter shares that tip with anyone outside tipping out the bartender and other waiters the head waiter specificly asks for help, IMO. Just like anywhere else, if you're the top waiter at a restaurant as nice as that, you've earned it.
For the record, if I'm billionaire, I'd rack up even bigger tabs at more expensive restaurants with more guests.
