60 Minutes did a very interesting piece a year or two ago about getting rid of the penny and the benefits and ramifications. Most expensive coin for the Mint to make IIRC.

I agree with both of you, but it will NEVER happen. Only way pennies stop being made is when the market place stops pricing so many things with 99 cents, or even just using a 9 in the tens digit for a price.

It would never work because sales tax is a percentage. Do you really want them to round up to the next nickle for everything you buy?
eg: if something is $50.35 and the tax is 7.5%, that's $3.78 in tax. It's not as much the amount, it's what happens to that other $.03? Do you keep it, the store keep it or does it go to the gov?
