Mexico decriminalizes small-scale drug possession

Unread postby fundamentals » Fri Aug 21, 2009 5:02 pm

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Mexico decriminalized small amounts of marijuana, cocaine and heroin on Friday—a move that prosecutors say makes sense even in the midst of the government's grueling battle against drug traffickers.
Prosecutors said the new law sets clear limits that keep Mexico's corruption-prone police from extorting casual users and offers addicts free treatment to keep growing domestic drug use in check.

They should do the same thing here. I think the total legalization of pot is a good idea. You stop wasting money locking up small time dealers and users, while gaining money through taxation. There are way too many non violent drug users and dealers in jail. Prohibition never works. It only serves to take 2 bit thugs and turn them into uber powerful crimelords.

The Mexico decriminalization is a small, but great, first step. You won't be arrested, but if you keep getting picked up with small amounts you will be forced into treatment. It's still way better than tossing someone in prison for carrying, and I hate the laws that say if you are carrying more than a certain amount then you can be convicted of "possession with intent to distribute", which is the most bullshit imaginary crime ever.

Absolutely, Intent drug laws are beyond stupid. Just because i'm carrying a large amount of pot doesn't mean i'm going to sell it. Which shouldn't be a crime in the first place. Marijuana doesn't cause 1/100th of the problems alcohol does, yet it's labled with the stupid ass "gateway drug" tag. Which was probably made up by some dumbshit Drug Czar or DEA toadie.

I'd still argue they're behind California in the legalization of weed race. ;-) ;)

Mexico is behind everybody in everything, except corruption.

Pound for pound it is the worst country on the planet. A shame really b/c there are enough good people that the country as a whole doesn't deserve to be in the position it is.

The continent of Africa disagrees with you.

It's far from the worst country on the planet.

That title would have to go to Somalia.

That is why I said pound for pound.

Mexico has has GDP that ranks in the top 15 in the world, what is Somalia bottom 5? Mexico has no business being a third world country like they are (especially since they share a border with a 1st world country). Somalia as least has an excuse.

Parts of Mexico aren't 3rd world, some are, but Mexico City has everything any major city in the US has. I've been to TJ, which isn't quite 3rd world, but it's close. It's a place I probably wouldn't go back to since the Cartles love to abduct and torture Americans. I'd like to see more of the country, avoiding places like Cabo San Lucas and Cancun, since they're nothing more than resorts for fat white Americans. Guadalajara might be a nice choice.

I might be heading to TJ for some dental work but I am a little nervous about it. Slightly anyway. We went down a few times when we first moved out here but the novelty quickly wore off.
