A musical. Not the original (it was), but the movie (it is). Classic Tim Burton, dark and morbid. The ending is pretty good, but most of the movie is slow (too much singing). Save your money, unless you really like Tim Burton.

As I mentioned in the review, if you hate musicals, you need to stay away from this movie.

Anyone who saw the Sondheim version on stage is going to come away impressed.

That was a bad part of the marketing, as you had no way of knowing by watching the trailers that this was an operetta...which would undoubtably leading musical haters to freak out once they got there expecting "Corpse Bride" or "Sleepy Hollow".

I think that was very clever marketing. You tell everyone it is a musical and you won't get near the audience coming to see the movie

At the risk of sounding elitist, who doesn't know that "Sweeny Todd" is a musical?

I had no clue. How would I know? I don't follow theater at all. The only musical I know is the Lion King and that is because I see the commercials on TV.
