Looks do not count, what so ever.

Strictly going off of talent and the enjoyment their music gives you.

My two favorites are Karen Carpenter (to this day her voice cannot be touched) and Carly Simon (great song writer).

Dennis Leary- "If Mama Cass had shared a sandwich with Karen Carpenter they'd both still be alive today".

Shit. I can't think of one that's not gay. Melissa Etheridge, Janis Joplin, Joan Jett..... Alright....I'll go early Melissa Etheridge ('Somebody Bring Me Some Water' era), and Dolores O'Riordan (the Irish broad from the Cranberries) whose voice is haunting and strong.

You're gonna tell me this voice:

is better than this voice:

...but at least you, like me, are not going by looks.

Delores O'Riordan.

One of the greatest voices anywhere.

Although Amy Lee from Evanesence is damn close.

Great call, Yog. It brings to mind a couple of others with good voices, Gladys Knight has a great set of pipes and Marilyn McCoo from the Fifth Dimension.

Can you imagine the size of the kid's mouths had Carly Simon married Steven Tyler?

My vote goes to Janis Joplin of course. If the criteria was "of the living", I would have to say Chaka Khan.

LOL. I'm actually a fan of both eras. I had a HUGE crush on sister Nancy Wilson during my middle school years in the 80s.

She even had a cameo in Fast Times and Ridgemont High, as she drives up to Hamilton at the stop light, while he's got the pirate gear on. This gets lost because that movie contains perhaps the greatest movie character of all time - Mike Damone.

Chrissie Hynde from the Pretenders is probably my choice if looks weren't an option...

If looks counted, I might have to go with either the shitty albums from Lohan or J Love Hewett.

One of my all time fav movies, and characters for sure.

Gotta fire this one up from the DVD collection soon.

Don't know that I'd call her one of my favorite artists, but Christina Aguilera can freakin' wail. Unlike other recent pop tarts that use electronics to amp up their voices, Christina can actually sing.

Janice Joplin could rip into a song with the best of 'em. Too bad she flamed out so quickly.

I have a strange affinity for Poe. Not sure I am informed enough on the subject to call her the best ever, but she is my favorite at this life juncture.
