Game Systems

Unread postby motherscratcher » Wed Nov 14, 2012 9:36 pm

What's the best gaming system for a 4 year old?

I'm leaning toward that new Wii U coming out in a few days. Looks like the controller has an iPad-like screen so it would be familiar to him. Also, latest thing and all that shit.

I'm not a gamer myself. The last system I ever gave a shit about is the original Nintendo.

Any reason I should look at anything else?

Wii is great for kids. Fun for adults. Got one when my son turned 4 three years ago, and we have had three years of fun with it.

Buy him a Dremel and all sorts of prickly little precision tools, just for S&G's.

You might want to ask FMB2.0, I think he had some really cool gaming systems back in his day, IIRC it was called a stick.

I think I'm going with a Wii too. My kid played his cousin's Wii and Kinect this weekend and seemed to take to the Wii more.

He played Mario Cart and loved it. Only game I know so far.

So, what the hell is a WiiU? Is that just a different controller?

I think it's a hand held version - but if I knew shit about gaming I wouldn't be asking questions on a message board.

You gotta get Wii Sports Resort. Very good game. Never gets old. Lots of different events.

The Lego games are fun to play along with your kids too. You can play 2P at the same time. My little guy and I have had some fun days and nights kicking ass and collecting lego bricks playing Lego Star Wars ... where you sequentially play through all six movies.

And Worms Battle Islands. Such a classic.

Those are the three I've played more than others. Mario Cart is fun. All the Mario games actually are good. And most where you can play along with your kid, which is good for a 5 year old.

My son is 7.5 and getting more into the sports games now, which I love. Kid plays Madden non stop on his handheld DS, and I got him Madden for the Wii for XMas. I am fired up for the head to head wars that loom.

Be sure to set it at "Pat Shurmur Level" for him to start. But he might be too advanced at 7.5 yo.

Not a gamer so excuse the ignorance.

But kids have a Wii and also have an old PS2. You can still buy new PS2 games and the youngest is getting the FIFA '13 Soccer game on PS2. Issue is they don't sell that here yet so I had to order it on ebay and ship from England.

Bigger issue is PS2 just died last night. Blue screen or some shit, I haven't looked and know nothing about them anyway.

But, if worse comes to worse, can that PS2 game be played on a PS3? Any PS3 or a certain config?

I can already see how this will be going:

There will be a new PS3 and a new FIFA '13 PS3 game in her future while I accept dimes on the dollar for the PS2 game that's unopened.

Thanks for any help.

Thank you. I'll check it when I get home and see what other games may work but appears the FIFA '13 game won't work on new PS3's.

Naturally.

Got that PS2 FIFA 13 game late after shipping delays and doesn't spin in PS2 we have. Are games I'd get from England not cmpatible with US PS2s?

No. England is a PAL region. The US is NTSC.

Any way to jerry rig a system to take off regional restrictions?

Yes. But I believe it requires cracking the fucker open and soldering a mod chip to the motherboard. Sounds like something right up your alley, eh?

Fuck. I barely know how to plug the damn things in. Well, I thought it was a good idea when I ordered it from over there.

Pretty much every gaming system sold in the entire world has those damn region locks. It's stupid, because it cuts consumers off from continuing to buy games for older systems that are still supported in the other regions.

You might want to just look into getting a PS3 or 360. I'm not sure which is better since I only have owned the 360. The PS Blu Ray feature might be a big selling point if you don't have one. I just hate Sony's controller compared the 360's.

Shit, I just bought a Sega Dreamcast for $27..... and that might be the finest console ever made.
