Actually was talking with a friend today, about how terrible the local rock station is. (WRQK)

For some reason, whenever I flip the station on, it's playing that one god-awful song by that Nikki Sixx band that's not Motley Crue. His choice of lead-singer for this abortion is a Daughtery clone.

For some reason, the station is also obsessed with Disturbed. Which in my mind, is the worst excuse for a rock band I've ever seen. It's so beyound cookie cutter it's not even funny. Lyrics are whiny, Singer has little talent, and the backing group lacks anything out of a couple of chords. Yet, the DJ's there hype these guys up like mad.

I don't really listen to the radio to listen to learn new "music" anymore (unless it's sirius, which is awesome), the playlist on the stations out there now-a-days is just too limited.

Maybe it would be better if we said "a band who might have a song played on the radio". Tool's best songs have never reached the light of radio, and I think Nirvana's best album is Bleach, but that one hasn't gotten much airtime either. Yet there are Tool songs and Nirvana songs that DO get airtime.

all reasons why I listened to college radio back in the late 70's/early 80's. Luckily my sister, who is 5 yrs older, had friends who listened to stations at the top of the dial. So while getting the fix from 'MMS,M105,etc, I heard new, different music from bands like u2, REM, Violent Femmes, Bauhaus, The Replacements, etc that I never would have heard of until after any commercial success/MTV video play. While still having to be Parmacentric and being exposed to the latest hit that Uncle Vic spun on 'GCL, I was able to go hit up a place like Record Revolution and find import albums and these "underground" bands I heard. That, for me at least, was half the fun getting into music, the searching and not conforming to what my peers were listening to. Once I found something that appealed to me, I went back to find other bands/albums from the same genre and took a listen. The advent of MTV and their quest to fill a 24/7 timeslot pushed alot of bands that would have had to crawl through the underground normally, into the spotlight w/ videos of awful lipsync performances or conceptual flicks that no one understood.

Again it's what makes music so subjective and so personal. While I could throw The Cure's Pornography on my list b/c of how I discovered it, how I related to the music, someone else here could shake their head, point and laugh at me and tell me that Coverdale is God and Whitesnake's Slide it in was the Zeppelin 4 of the 80's.

I wasn't bowled over after a few listens, but it really grew on me and I really like it. Track 2 (Jambi?) is one of my favorite songs of theirs.

I too really disliked it at first. It seemed to lack passion. When I like Tool best, it's like on Third Eye (Aenima) where the song is slow and melodic but has bursts of fury, and it seemed like Maynard's fury waned as his fame rose (or he got old). But the more you listen to 10,000 Days, you realize that it's simply a maturation of their work, and you learn to appreciate it for what it is.

But since I apparently haven't matured as much as Tool has in the last 20 years, I will admit I still like the angrier stuff better. The simple fact is that because there are always these vast gaps of time between their albums, these transitions in sound are more jarring. If they put out, say, an album every 2-3 years, I think it would be easier to trace the transition like with, for instance, the Beatles.

To me, Tool is one part Rush's lyrical/thematic pretense, one part Morphene's dirge, one part Live's faux passion, one part radiohead's overrated production, and one part Les Clapool's annoyingly over the top base.

I like Miles Davis too, but as to why he's in the R&R HOF/museum for some brief fushion work. I have no idea. Miles plays jazz. And jazz isn't r n r , no matter what Tap tried to do witout Nigel.

And yeah, I have a pretty narrow definition. Either you have a musical pangaea and evaluate as Satchmo said, or you have discrete categories and you keep 'em. I don't think blues is rock and roll either. It heavily influenced r n r, but it ain't rock anymore than ur an australiopithicus.

In the interest of full diclosure, I never played anything but a tape deck and turntable, but I've hung out with those who have. There's different chord structures, rythems, all that technical music shit, the objectively defines styles of music.

A. Rock and Hip Hop can and should be classified in different genres. Both to be enjoyed.

B. To your point jb, I've got buddies who see shows 3 nights a week in Chicago. I've never heard of a single freaking band they see. Once in a while they stumble into an upstart The National or Arctic Monkeys, but most of the time it's no great shakes. Point is, they'd never accept a known band as cool. As soon as Arcade Fire got on TV, they became passe. That's just who these guys are, and I'm glad they are so into the music scene. I imagine they like to play the role of taste-makers and social leaders. But, at the same time, they deny Miles Davis as having modern relevance and think Biggie Smalls started rap. It's a strange subset. Am I describing hipsters?

"Rock" defined as non-rap, got it. Although if you don't think Fear of a Black Planet or Death Certificate rocked the shit, you may have a gaping hole in your psyche. Not my problem.

No where did I say that, and I agree that there are many great Rap albums that "rock". And I said at the very beginning that if you consider that "Rock", be my guest. But if we're gonna quibble about what Rock is or isn't, then maybe I should just say fuck it and turn it into Best Albums.

The reason I didn't is that it seems to me that there is a pronounced lack of quality music generally described as "Rock" in the last 30 years, so turning this into "Best Albums" would be a much different list and just underline how dead the genre is becoming.

If someone asks you what the best Rock album of the 2000's was, where do YOU draw that line? I tried to give a broad definition, but I stick to my original emphasis that if you consider it "Rock", then list it. No reason to get all bitchy.
