10 Best Rock Albums of the Last 30 Years

Unread postby hiko » Tue Mar 01, 2011 2:41 pm

This is something I've been thinking about some lately, due to the fact that any "Best of Rock" list is Pre-1980 heavy (likely due to the lingering death of Rock). So I was curious what everyone considered the Best Rock Albums of the last 30 years (basically, since 1980) were.

Naturally, "Rock" is loosely defined, so if you consider Eminem or Outkast or the Beastie Boys to be "Rock", feel free to use them (if you feel their albums qualify as "Best" of course. Also feel free to use more than one album by a particular artist.

I'm sure I'm missing something, but my 10 are (in no particular order):

Tool - Aenima
Metallica - Ride the Lightning
Guns n Roses - Appetite for Destruction
System of a Down - Toxicity
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
Nirvana - Bleach
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes
Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine
Ministry - The Mind is a Terrible Thing To Taste

This is a good idea. I would also suggest that you make your list before reading through the thread so as not to be improperly influenced.

I'll be back.

Maybe I am really splitting hairs here, but do you mean "best" as in "should be included from a contribution to the genre type of way" or best as in "these are the ones I personally liked best"?

'cause if we were to consider the former, then for example some U2 pre-sellout album (Joshua Tree?) might be included - not that I am a bigfan but it's hard to overlook their influence

Not this album, which is too old and too post-punk for most of you guys, but it makes it just under the wire (January 1980). Not saying it deserves Hiko's Top 10, but there was good music released in the early 80's. Or so I've been told :hide:

Eh, I think there's a smidgen of good music from the 80s, but I didn't experience very much of it through individual albums, and I have enough sense to be a just a little bit embarrassed by most of what I've come to like through greatest hits collections.

But this, of course, only applies to rock. There's nothing to be embarrassed about with Eric B & Rakim, for example.

Tough to do- But if I had to take only ten LPs and had to be happy with my choices, variety, quality, I'd go with these and be okay.

Foo Fighters- Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace

BareNaked Ladies- Rock Spectacle

The Killers- Hot Fuss

The Offspring- Americana

Kid Rock- Devil Without a Cause

Tom Petty- Into the Great Wide Open

Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band- The Rising

Green Day- Dookie

Nelly- Country Grammar

Big & Rich- Horse of a Different Color

I'd go more along the line of what you liked best. There are many albums that could be considered important or influential, but I don't particularly care for them myself.

I guess I'll be the lone college/alt rock representative, since I actually write more about music than I do about sports. These aren't my favorites, exactly, but they're the most obvious/influential (off the top of my head) if we're talking about guitars being played and side stepping the words "metal," "punk," and "arena rock."

REM - Murmur
The Replacements - Tim
Smiths - The Queen is Dead
Pixies - Doolittle
Stone Roses - S/T
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Pearl Jam - Ten (borderline arena rock)
Soundgarden - Superunknown
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Weezer - Blue Album
Beck - Odelay
Radiohead - OK Computer
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
My Morning Jacket - It Still Moves
White Stripes - Elephant
Black Keys - Rubber Factory
Arcade Fire - Funeral

This was hard. I eliminated any rap, jazz, and blues. I included only records that I own, because if I don't own it, how can I call it my top ten? One album per group. Some tough omissions.

In no order:

1. Van Halen - For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
2. Radiohead - OK Computer
3. U2 - Joshua Tree
4. Metallica - Master of Puppets
5. Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic
6. Pearl Jam - Ten
7. Nirvana - Nevermind
8. Alice In Chains - Jar of Flies
9. Green Day - Dookie
10. Guns n Roses - Appetite For Destruction

I know there isn't anything very obscure here, but these albums were popular as hell for a reason.

I'm not this old, just showing my appreciation for the nostalgia of early 80's rock :hide:

In order based on what I still listen to first, and what I can't believe I once liked but it seemed really rockin' at the time, ::doh:: at the end

Nirvana – Nevermind
Sublime – Sublime
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik
Green Day – American Idiot
Metallica – Master of Puppets
The Pretenders – The Pretenders
U2 – Rattle and Hum
Springsteen - The River
Tom Petty - Full Moon Fever
John Mellencamp - Uh-Huh

A great list. Not that you would want me in your corner. I really wanted to add GnR and Alice in Chains to my list, but have such a soft spot for Chrisse Hynde. The Mellencamp thing is whack, but the truth. Things change a lot in 30 years yo.

And torrents are flie sharing via seeders and leechers. Someone uploads a movie/game/program/album/TV Show and you download it. If you have a decent internet connection you can download a full season of The Sopranos in about 2 hrs.

I have like 400 GB of stuff

I think mother and matt's lists are pretty decent, personally I think 1984 was the better VH album (kind of under rated), I also agree with CDT's pick of Pantera VDoP.

Agree w/ alot already listed.

I'll try a list of albums not mentioned yet

in no particular order
Brother in Arms - Dire Straits
London Calling - The Clash
Zen Arcade - Husker Du
Disintegration-The Cure
Achtung Baby - U2
Fear of a Black Planet -Public Enemy
Siamese Dreams -Smashing Pumpkins

The Bends - Radiohead

love this subject and could probably do a top 10 per genre. Too hard to just list 10 overall

I had the Pretenders debut album. Not to pick at nits, but Born to Run was released in the late 70's, as were some of the early Foreigner albums.

Seeing some in there that it was/is hard to leave off the list... Faith No More, Sublime, Pixies, White Stripes, even Van Halen...

Speaking of torrents, does anyone recommend a nice safe torrent site?

I've never had problems with http://thepiratebay.org

http://isohunt.com/ is another favorite.

I'll search with Google, say "football torrent" and then pick out piratebay or isohunt. A lot of the others want you to join something to direct download, or send you on a wild goose chase from site to site (with advertisements) just to get hits. Some set off my virus scanner. But those two have been alright. So far.

No kidding. Very difficult. I had a tough time.

I could have had 3 Radiohead albums on my list but I wanted to keep it to one. Hail to teh Thief was probably my hardest cut.

Back In Black was a tough cut.

Van Halen was tough too. SSS - Fair Warning is great, but it doesn't blow Fuck away. Of course, I'm partial to Sammy (I know it blasphemy but it's how I feel and I ain't gonna lie.) I just knew VH had to be there. I picked between FUCK and 5150.

Spin- Get the fuck out of here with Bush. You should be ashamed of yourself. :nanner:

http://btjunkie.org/

Huge site, tons of torrents, i've never had a single problem with the DLs. The only one I use.

According to my Antivirus, The Pirate Bay has "active threats" on just about every page, not really sure what that means, but I quit using it.

Dave or the grave for me,

Sort of had my start at his unofficial fansite back in the day, actually it was due in part to someone linking me here, that I got my start here.

Sonofabitch, I thought I killed you once and for all.

I should have known you'd come back around tourney time with your ridiculous 6-team shootout or whatever the eff it was called.

I stopped the snuff almost 6 months ago. Had you been around home more often for me and my sister you woulda known that you bastard.

You going to the MAC Tourney at all with a sweet deal off those Cavs tix?

Still trying to weasel my way into media credentials for the NCAA. Got 'em for the MAC but, you're not gonna believe, the NCAA's are apparently a tougher ticket.

No Vegas amigo. I played health roulette a couple months back and lost. I figure I'll try and take care of that nut first, talk about going to Vegas next year and then never follow up on it again til next March.

It always seems so far away when we talk about it while watching first round games and the next thing I know it's that time again.

One day...

Is all good with you? Hope so. Dawn good too? What days are the NCAA's here, Thurs-Sat or Fri-Sun?

PS- mom says FU but I swear she'd take ya back.

8th of November

It's okay though. If they listened to a lot of it they'd get past the candy store crap that got them enough notice to do what they do.

Galley Boys are slop on top of a so-so burger and a bun you coulde get from a Covneninet food mart generic pack. They the Antoine Joubert of burgers; soft, sloppy, oozing grease and cheap sauce and extremely overrated by a biased fan base. Proof that if you throw enough cheap sauce shit on a burger you still can't overcome the lame burger. -JB
