Should have caught this one while it was in limited release.
Amazing little story that in some regards reminded me of "Sling Blade" in its storytelling and the area of the country addressed by it.
Ree, a dirt poor 17 year old girl in the Missouri Ozarks takes care of her 12 year old brother and 6 year old sister. Her mom is there, but she's a near vegetable due to god-knows-what kind of tragedy. Dad, a crank cooker, is missing a few days before his trial, so the sheriff inform Ree that if he doesn't turn up, the county will take their house and land.
Ree sets out to find him, knowing she'll have to deal with relatives who don't want him to be found. These Arkansas hilljacks make the inbreds in Deliverance look warm and fuzzy.
Great story, and some incredible acting, mostly from the Jennifer Lawrence, the then-19 year old playing Ree.
Disturbing as hell in many places, but not a total downer like "The Road" (even if the landscape there was almost as bleak). Good mystery as well, but mostly just an amazing character at the center of it all, peformed by an actress who has one hell of a future.
