The Dark Tower Movie/TV Series

Unread postby StewieG » Wed Sep 08, 2010 11:35 pm

Stephen King's excellent Dark Tower series is going to be a movie trilogy AND a TV series.

How it would work is the first movie will play first, then the TV series will bridge the gap between movies 1 and 2. The second movie would then play, followed by the second season of the TV series (which would go into the part of the story where the Young Roland takes center stage. The third movie would conclude the series.

The actors would have to sign on for 3 movies and 2 TV series...which is highly unusual, possibly unique (at least in terms of signing on for movies and TV at the same time).

If this works, could it spawn a new way of doing epic stories? Could we see something like the Illiad or Odyssey?

The other thing is, maybe THIS is how to do things like Mass Effect...which I don't think will work as a movie. The story is just too big to be told in 2 hours.

Cool, I really hope they don't eff it up.

I would start over from the beginning every time a new book came out. After the 4th book I just waited until it was finished. Then I read the whole damn thing start to finish.

I would not recommend that. It was just too damn much.

Still a great story. It may have gone off the rails a little bit toward the end. Or, maybe I was just burnt out. Hard to tell.

I'll have to think about the cast. Viggo Mortinson seems like Roland. May be too obvious. Doubt he'd sign on anyway.

Went the same route as you did MS...

Read the first 4 books as they were released, then waited for the final 3 and then went back and read all 7 in a row including the shortstories, etc...

Took about 3.5 months to read almost 4K pages, but unlike you, I never got burned out and thought that was the best way to keep it all fresh (too many friggin characters to remember)...

Hope this film/tv thing works, but unless Frank Darabont is behind it then I'm skeptical...Just keep Opie Cunningham away from it, please...

Better yet, get HBO behind it

Opie, Akiva Goldsman, and Brian Grazer are doing it. They're the ones who did A Beautiful Mind and The DaVinci Code.

Opie will figure out a way to make the Dark Tower as bland and banal as possible. Steve Guttenberg as Roland, perhaps?

The man in black fled across the desert and the Gunslinger followed.

Surly, even Opie and Tom Hank's hair couldn't screw that up, right?
