I saw this was on TCM the other night, so I recorded it and watched it tonight.
Wow.
The movie is just a simple story of a difficult period in a relatively normal family's life after a tragic loss, and what really carries it is the acting. Robert Redford (in his directorial debut) got some great performances out of his cast, and won the Oscar for Best Director for this movie that won Best Picture.
Both Timothy Hutton and Judd Hirsch were nominated for Best Supporting Actor, with Hutton winning. Mary Tyler Moore was nominated for Best Actress. Entertainment Weekly says that one of the biggest Oscar snubs of all time was the failure of the academy to nominate Donald Sutherland for Best Actor.
This isn't a movie that I'm in any hurry to watch again, because it is just so damn emotionally difficult, but I'm glad I saw it.
