Is it just me or does this movie just look mind blowingly stupid plot wise and is being used strictly as an excuse to use CGI?

Rolland Emmerich is the Anti-Scorsasae/Francis Ford Copola/Spielberg, and the only way his movies are able to stay from not ending up "straight to DVD" are his superior CGI usage.

reminds me a lot of "The Day After Tomorrow" with Dennis Quaid. I saw that movie for the effects only. Glad I did not pay to see it.

I may be wrong, but I think 2012 is directed by the same guy as The Day After Tomorrow.

And "Independence Day".

And "10,000 B.C."

And "Godzilla"

And "The Patriot"

And "Stargate"

Common theme? Great CGI...questionable storytelling ability...often amusingly watchable movies that you feel guilty about 30 minutes after you watch them.

Indepedence Day was also helped a bit by a good cast. Goldblum, while a bit corny did a pretty good job in it, you see Will Smith was pretty good as well in one of his first major roles, hell, even Bill Pullman pulled off probably the greatest cheesy speech in the history of cinema. The soundtrack auctually wasn't half-bad as well. An extremely cheesey movie, but it's hard to really hate on it. It's a guitly pleasure of mine, and one of my favorites ever

I also like "The Patriot", not exactly historically acurate, but an entertaining watch. Ledger and Gibson did a good job in it, I thought.

Movies like "The Day After Tommorow" though, just come off in the other direction, the cast suck, thus the weak script and physically impossible events shine through versus the other movies. Plus the pushing of Al Gore's masterbatory fantasies got old.

After seeing the trailer, I KNOW I never I want to see this movie. Stargate was the only film on that list I even remotely enjoyed, and it still had a lot of problems.
